HSC 2026 has started: Here’s How to Start Strong

Oct 9, 2025

You’ve made it. Twelve years of schooling have led to this moment and everything you’ve learned so far has prepared you for what’s next. This is the year where it all comes together. The HSC isn’t just about exams; it’s about bringing your skills, mindset, and effort together to finish strong and set yourself up for what comes after school.  Here are some key mindset and study skill shifts you can make now to conquer your HSC year with confidence and momentum.

Make these shifts now for a strong start and an epic finish

1. Set a Clear Vision

Every summit climb starts with a destination in mind.

What does “success” look like for you? Why are you doing this HSC and what do you want to get out of it? Whether its a goal ATAR, a uni course, an overseas exchange, or having lot’s of options post school.

We are big on VISION BOARDS and encourage all new HSC students to spend 20 minutes building a visual representation of their future to put on theit study wall. Trust us… motivation is going to dip from time to time over the next 12 months and there will be countless tasks you don’t feel like doing. Reminding yourself of the big picture, your goals and where you want to be in 12 months time will help you keep going when you’d rather give up.

2. Study Smart & Make The HOURS Count

Every HSC student has the same number of hours between now and the exams. What separates the top performers isn’t talent, it’s how they use their time.

The most successful students focus on effective strategies that prepare them for the exam room, not just keep them busy.

  • Prioritise active preparation. Spend more time on past papers, timed responses, and self-testing rather than just passively writing and reading notes.

  • Plan your study blocks. Short, focused sessions (45–60 minutes) with a clear goal are far more powerful than long, unfocused cramming.

  • Track your progress. Know what you’ve mastered and what still needs work. We all like to focus more of our time on the subjects and tasks we enjoy and are good at, however ignoring those tougher topics where improvement is needed is not going to help you down the track.

3. Embrace the Struggle Zone

The moments that feel uncomfortable are where the growth happens. It’s easy to revise the topics you already know, but that’s like training for a marathon by walking around the block. Push your comfort zone early:

  • Attempt harder questions.

  • Look ahead at what is coming up in the classroom.

  • Get feedback. It might not always be what you want to hear but feedback now vs. days before the exam is gold.

4. Start Small, Stay Consistent

Don’t try to overhaul your life overnight. Start with just 20 minutes a day outside of your required homework to engage in proactive training such as past questions and active recall through mindmaps from memory and using the CoWorks flashcard training game to test yourself around your notes.

The goal is momentum. Small consistent actions every day is better than huge bursts of effort once in a while.

At CoWorks, we call this “training daily” because the climb is easier when you’re already in motion. If you want this to be your no regrets year, train like it from day one.

Your future self will thank you for starting strong.
