YOUR CUSTOMISED HSC COWORKS PROGRAM
Thank you for taking the time to submit your responses.
We liken the challenge of the HSC to climbing a mountain, Mount HSC©.
With this in mind, the goal of a student’s HSC year is to become an accomplished mountain climber because let’s face it, life is just a series of mountains (or challenges) and if a student can develop the skills needed to overcome challenges now, they will be in a much better position for life after school has finished. Based on your responses we can see that your child is an Emerging Mountain Climber who needs a lot of support with planning, a higher level of accountability for their output and more commitment in their completion of the tasks which will better prepare them for assessments and the exam room.
Our recommendations:
Conquering Mount HSC© is never going to be easy and with so many possible distractions for teenagers these days (Tik Tok, Netflix, Instagram, gaming and phones in general to name a few..) it has never been harder for them to stay motivated and focused on the task at hand.
Recommendation 1: Strong goals and HSC Vision
Having worked with 1000s of students we know that the only true way to succeed in the HSC is to be laser focused on the benefits and rewards that await them at the top of Mount HSC©. Let’s face it, no one is writing practice essays or putting in hours at the desk for fun. We know that students who have their goals up in front of them and connect with their ‘Why’ every single day are much less likely to be distracted, procrastinate or only complete the bare minimum tasks each week.
recommendation 2: planning & time management
Emerging Mountain Climbers often leave tasks to the last minute, are overwhelmed with the volume of work in the lead up to assessment tasks and rarely proactively take action towards approaching deadlines. A student’s study time is actually very limited (due to the competing agendas that teenagers have), so they must make the most of every study session with strong time management, proactively breaking tasks into smaller tasks and consistently eating frogs first (doing the tasks they don’t want to do first).
recommendation 3: Daily training
Emerging Mountain Climbers tend to be vague and uncertain on the foundational content that make up their topics or texts indicating that they aren’t doing the consistent revision necessary to give them the confidence and certainty to attempt the more challenging tasks.
Tasks such as syllabus topic mind maps under exam conditions, writing out English quotes from memory and completing Maths exam questions are necessary daily training tasks to ensure a student is confident around their coursework. If you can’t do the little things (recalling foundational content) well, how can you expect to do the big things (practice questions/essays) well?
recommendation 4: exam preparation
Exams are stressful situations so it is no surprise that unless the brain has adequately prepared for the exam conditions, the student will underperform. Emerging Mountain Climbers will typically avoid tasks that simulate the exam room due to their uncertainty around the foundational content (see above) and instead will focus their preparation on well intentioned but ineffective study tasks such as notes/highlighting/and hours spent sitting at the library.
So what tasks will prepare them for the exam room? Once a student is confident around the foundational content of their topics/texts, they need to move into practice questions and past papers under exam conditions (timed, handwritten, no peeking at your notes!).
recommendation 5: own it
In life we can either have excuses or we can have results but we can’t have both. Taking responsibility for our results is a key aspect of success in any endeavour. If we don’t take responsibility it is likely we will fall back on excuses and blaming external factors for our lack of performance. The student who lives by the mantra ‘If it’s to be, it’s up to me’ takes responsibility for making their goals their reality.

common questions
who are the experts working with my child?
Coaches
We have a team of high calibre Coaches who have recently completed the HSC, receiving ATARs between 95.50-99.75. Our current cohort of Coaches include duxes, ex school captains, state rankers and all rounders. What they all have in common is a passion for supporting the next generation of HSC students to overcome the challenges of the HSC year and achieve their dream result!
Teachers
Our Teachers have many years of experience and provide expert support to students across many different subjects. Our Teachers complement the work of the Coaching team.
Markers
Our Markers all have experience marking the HSC with NESA. Our markers mark over 10,000 essays each year and over 40,000 pieces of work in total across all HSC CoWorks students. Each marking includes feedback, direction and a mark which gets a student closer to knowing what the markers are looking for in the HSC.
what is the difference between the coaching sessions and the private sessions?
Coaching Session (2 HOURS)
During these sessions, students are collaborating 1-on-1 with a team of Coaches across their different subjects and topics. As students are working individually (not in groups), they are able to work on the tasks they need to at any given time.
An example of a student’s agenda for the session is;
-
- 10am: Join the session and the Session Leader will place you in your own virtual room. Coach Jade will work with you to develop a detailed plan which covers what the student will be focusing on over the session.
- 10:10-11am: Brainstorm and collaborate with Coach Rebecca for an upcoming English assessment. What is the question asking? What are the main themes/quotes/techniques you need to use? What could your thesis statement look like? Coach Rebecca sets student a task to submit an Essay Plan to the HSC CoWorks marking team before their next session.
- 11:00-11:45am: Complete practice questions on the HSC CoWorks Portal (or your own questions) for your current Maths topic, working with Coach Alastair on questions and concepts you are unfamiliar with.
- 11:45am-12:00pm: Planning with Coach Jade for the upcoming week.
PRIVATE SESSIONS
These sessions are 20-30 minutes long, working with the Subject Expert of your choice and are focused on a particular subject or topic in preparation for an upcoming asssesment task or exam.
The student will be able to ask questions and get clarification around any challenge that they are having.
Bookings are available 7 days a week and can be booked as close as 4 hours ahead.
can i just have my essays marked?
Our HSC Booster Package offers a marking service whereby students can submit practice Essays, draft Assessments, Essay Plans, Depth Studies, Maths assessments, Short Answer Questions and Major Works for feedback from experienced HSC Markers.
This package comes with the added bonus of 4 x targeted private sessions (30min duration) with a subject expert each month. Students can select the subject or topic they wish to work on in these sessions and ask questions, receive guidance or review recent feedback from the marking team. Additional private sessions and essay markings can be purchased if needed.
how quickly is a student's work marked?
Students can submit practice work in over 15 different subjects;
- Essays
- Draft Assessments
- Essay Plans
- Depth Studies
- Maths assessments
- Short Answer Questions
- Major Works
These are typed up and submitted via our online portal. The work will be marked and returned to the student via the portal within 72 hours. At times across the year students can see their work marked in under 3 hours!
What is the 'Ask a Coach' on Monday and Thursday?
“Ask a Coach” like the name suggests, allows students to join an online session with our expert coaches to ask questions, receive mentoring or go through difficult questions together.
“Ask a Coach” is also a great option for students who feel isolated studying at home alone. There is no pressure to ask a question or have a specific reason for joining, just come in and say “Hi”
Can I purchased additional essay markings
Each package has an allocation of essay markings which can be used in a month and these will rollover as credits for 60 days. For those students who wish to submit more essays in a particular month, additional essay markings can be purchased.
We also give away bonus markings to students who complete tasks on a daily basis (just our way of rewarding students for Daily Training!).

Implementation of our recommendations
Emerging Mountain Climber
Based on our recommendations above for the Emerging Mountain Climber, we have outlined how the HSC CoWorks program supports the implementation of these through our six Student Key Behaviours which cover motivation, organisation, consistency of effort, leaving the comfort zone, being resilient and taking responsibility.
As we always say at HSC CoWorks, “If the Key Behaviours are in place, everything else will take care of itself”
You will note that these key behaviours are not specific to the HSC and your child’s adoption of these will ensure that they are better prepared to conquer the mountains of life after school has finished (Mount Uni, Mount Career, Mount Life).
If a student is energised and committed to achieving their goals, they will have the resolve and self discipline to work on the tasks that count (well intentioned AND effective tasks).
Through regular planning and getting proactive around being prepared for what lies ahead students will take appropriate action well ahead of time. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!
Students ‘training’ consistently, will be much more prepared for the exam room. Completing ‘notes’ & ‘homework’ does not qualify as ‘training’ as there is very little struggle involved.
Without struggle, there is no progress! If you are completing the same easy tasks over and over, you will not get any better at a given subject, in the same way that if you keep doing the same exercises at the gym without increasing the weight or reps, you won’t get any stronger or fitter.
No one likes to leave their comfort zone, but it’s the only way to improve.
It is inevitable that you will encounter obstacles over year 11 and 12 and have at least one result which you’re upset about. The most important thing to remember is that one mark won’t change your ATAR – it is the response to the setback that is most important.
Displaying grit will allow you to use setbacks as a chance to learn and grow.
There is only one person who can make your HSC vision into a HSC reality and that is of course you!
The students who achieve the best results take initiative and responsibility for achieving their goals by applying all of the key behaviours, rather than relying on others to get them over the line and making excuses when it doesn’t happen.
🚨 MARCH RAFFLE – FINAL DAYS TO WIN A $75 WESTFIELD VOUCHER 🚨
Every rep = a shot to win.
Upload a Mind Map → 🎟️ 1 entry
Submit a Challenge Question → 🎟️ 1 entry
The more you submit… the more chances you have. Simple.
But here’s the real win 👇
Every submission = feedback
Every feedback = chance for improvement
🎯 Practice. Submit. Win.
One of the biggest mistakes students make in the HSC is trying to avoid getting things wrong.
❌ They delay practice.
❌ They wait until they feel ready.
❌ They leave feedback too late.
Confidence doesn’t come from getting your answers right the first time. It comes from getting it WRONG early enough to improve.
The students who perform best:
✅ Practice questions early
✅ Practice their writing consistently
✅ Get feedback weeks (not days) before exams
🎯 The goal isn’t to avoid failure. It’s to use it, early, so you can walk into exams calm, prepared, and confident.
The students who stay consistent during the HSC?
They’re not more disciplined. They’re more connected.
Connected to:
🏔️Where they’re going
🏔️ Who they want to become
🏔️ What’s possible if they follow through
Because when your vision is strong, you stop negotiating with yourself.
You don’t wake up and ask: “Do I feel like studying today?”
You wake up and ask: ““What do I need to do today to get closer to the top of Mount HSC?”
So many students wait until they feel motivated or have a solid study plan before they begin 🙅♀️🙅
But in reality, motivation usually comes after the first action is taken. You don’t need the perfect plan. You just need the first step.
Start small. Just start.

ENGAGE YOUR VISION
Your ‘Vision’ is the future you want to create for yourself through conquering a challenge. HSC CoWorks supports students to develop an inspiring vision of the future that they want to create through their HSC. We refer to this as their HSC Vision. From our A3 Vision Board template, to our virtual vision board to our regular check ins around what is awaiting students at the top of Mount HSC we help students stay focused on the big picture so they stay energised and motivated to keep climbing, even on the days they don’t want to.
If a student is energised and committed to achieving their goals, they will have the resolve and self discipline to work on the tasks that count (well intentioned AND effective tasks).
PLAN
Every student has the same number of hours available to them each day but it is how these hours are utilised which will determine the outcomes and results. The HSC CoWorks team is always working towards supporting students to make the most of their very limited study time.
We support students to plan ahead and break down their tasks into smaller tasks via our A4 planning pads, agenda setting at the start of each session and regular planning sessions. Students can upload their planning pad for coach feedback 7 days a week.
With solid planning and accountability, Consolidating Mountain Climbers will create more time for both a balanced life and be even more effective with their study time.
TRAIN. DAILY
For the Consolidating Mountain Climber, if they can maintain a methodical approach to all topics and attempt as many questions as possible they will be able to walk confidently into every exam.
Students can access our expert team 7 days a week throughout their HSC campaign so there is never a moment your child is not supported. From the targeted private sessions, drop-in support, quote training game and essay marking service, students on the starter package can train daily with the support and feedback of our expert team!
Our very popular ‘streaks’, ‘leaderboards’ and ‘badges’ encourage students to complete tasks on a daily basis making it easier to maintain momentum outside of assessment periods and build strong study habits.
PUSH YOUR COMFORT ZONE
Most people don’t like leaving their comfort zone, however for your child they have likely embraced the reality that this is the fastest way to improvement.
At HSC CoWorks we provide endless opportunities for students to stretch and challenge themselves so that they can find the gaps in their understanding and take action. As the consolidating mountain climber engages in these opportunities they will be supported by the marker feedback and collaborations with our expert Coaches and Teachers.
For the Consolidating Mountain Climber it’s likely your child is happy to leave their comfort zone but may need a structured approach to complete as many tasks as possible that will expand their capabilities.
GRIT
No one has achieved anything of significance in their lifetime without encountering and overcoming bucket loads of obstacles, set backs, failures and mistakes. It is these very setbacks that are shaping us to be stronger for our next attempt. Get knocked down to the ground? Get up and let’s keep climbing.
The Consolidating Mountain Climber is well on their way to understanding that mistakes and setbacks are part of the process but we can all benefit from some extra encouragement to pick ourselves up off the ground when we are telling ourselves to just stay down. Our coaches, teachers and markers will continually encourage students to try again until they get it right.
OWN IT
At HSC CoWorks we are firm believers in the student taking ownership of the HSC process.
HSC CoWorks will be climbing side by side with the student along their HSC journey, however it is the student’s responsibility to do the hard work and thinking. The opportunity to be mentored, coached and supported by those who have been through the same process before is highly valuable for the Consolidating Mountain Climber.
