How to Stay Motivated in Term 2.. When the HSC Feels Miles Away!

May 7, 2025

Staying motivated during Term 2 of the HSC year can be challenging. With the final exams still months away, it’s common for students to experience a dip in motivation. However, this period is crucial for building momentum, getting proactive and setting the stage for success.

1. Acknowledge the Term 2 Motivation Dip

Mid-year slumps happen to everyone. The initial energy of Term 1 & 2 of your HSC year fades, and with the trial exams still months away, the sense of urgency hasn’t fully kicked in. This doesn’t mean you’re lazy or incapable—it just means you’re human. Acknowledge the slump, then take action with intention.

2. Stack Small Wins Every Day

Big goals like “achieve X ATAR” can feel too far away to spark motivation. Instead, break your goals into daily or weekly challenges that you can win. Whether it’s finishing a past paper, completing a mind map from memory, or sticking to your study plan—those are wins worth stacking.

Tip: Start each study session with a clear, achievable goal. For example:

• Complete 2 practice questions
• Revise one topic using flashcards
• Summarise today’s lesson into 5 key points

3. Revisit Your ‘Why’

When motivation fades, reconnecting to your purpose can reignite the fire. Ask yourself:
Why do I want to do well in the HSC?
What kind of future am I working toward?
Who am I doing this for (including myself)?

Tip: Revisit your vision board. Does it need updating? How motivated does it make you feel?

4. Take Breaks That Actually Recharge You

Sometimes a lack of motivation is really just a sign of burnout. Don’t confuse discipline with working non-stop. Taking regular, guilt-free breaks can actually fuel motivation.

Tip: Try the 50/10 rule—study for 50 minutes, break for 10. Use the break to move your body, not scroll.

Every rep = a shot to win.
Upload a Mind Map → 🎟️ 1 entry
Submit a Challenge Question → 🎟️ 1 entry
The more you submit… the more chances you have. Simple.
But here’s the real win 👇
Every submission = feedback
Every feedback = chance for improvement
🎯 Practice. Submit. Win.
One of the biggest mistakes students make in the HSC is trying to avoid getting things wrong.
❌ They delay practice.
❌ They wait until they feel ready.
❌ They leave feedback too late.
Confidence doesn’t come from getting your answers right the first time. It comes from getting it WRONG early enough to improve.
The students who perform best:
✅ Practice questions early
✅ Practice their writing consistently
✅ Get feedback weeks (not days) before exams
🎯 The goal isn’t to avoid failure. It’s to use it, early, so you can walk into exams calm, prepared, and confident.
The students who stay consistent during the HSC?
They’re not more disciplined. They’re more connected.
Connected to:
🏔️Where they’re going
🏔️ Who they want to become
🏔️ What’s possible if they follow through
Because when your vision is strong, you stop negotiating with yourself.
You don’t wake up and ask: “Do I feel like studying today?”
You wake up and ask: ““What do I need to do today to get closer to the top of Mount HSC?”
