It might feel like you’ve only just started Year 12, but by Christmas, you’ll already be around 25% of the way through your HSC school year.
The good news is that what you do over the next few weeks can make a huge difference to how confidently you approach your first assessments, and how much you can actually relax over summer.
So, before the assessment period kicks in, here are three things you should be focusing on right now.
1. Get Organised and Take Control of Your Workload
One of the biggest challenges of Year 12 isn’t necessarily the difficulty of the content. It’s managing everything that needs to get done. Between school, homework, assessments, sport, work and your social life, it’s easy to feel busy without actually making meaningful progress.
Here’s where to start:
- Map out your assessments. Know exactly what’s coming up, when it’s due and what content will be assessed.
- Break big tasks into smaller ones. An English essay or Economics assessment feels much more manageable when you’ve broken it into achievable steps.
- Plan your week. Allocate specific times to work on each subject rather than deciding what to study when you sit down.
- Tackle the difficult tasks first. Don’t spend all your time on the subjects or activities you already feel confident in. We call this “Eating your Frogs”.
2. Master Your Foundational Content NOW
Here’s a mistake we see students make every year. They wait until an assessment is approaching before they start properly learning and revising the content.
Three things to focus on now:
- Active recall: Test yourself on what you’ve learned rather than simply rereading your notes.
- Spaced repetition: Revisit content regularly so it moves into your long-term memory.
- Identify knowledge gaps: Get feedback on your work and find out what you don’t know now, while there’s still time to do something about it.
This is exactly why we’ve built interactive flashcard training into the HSC CoWorks Student Portal. Students can turn their study notes into flashcards, train using different question formats and use our spaced repetition function to revisit concepts before they forget them.
Your goal: Know your foundational content better than any other student in your school.
3. Start Training for the Exam Room, Not Just Learning the Content
Knowing your content is important but knowing how to apply that knowledge under exam conditions is what separates students who understand the material from students who can consistently demonstrate their understanding and achieve strong results.
Here’s what to practice:
- Past-paper and exam-style questions: Get familiar with how HSC questions are structured and what they’re actually asking.
- Timed responses: Practise working under time pressure so you’re not caught off guard in the assessment room.
- Essay writing: Learn how to build strong arguments, structure responses and apply feedback to improve your writing.
- Understanding marking criteria: Know what distinguishes an average response from a high-mark response.
At HSC CoWorks, our students have access to experienced HSC teachers and markers who can provide expert feedback on their written responses. Our coaches also help students develop exam techniques, build confidence and understand how to turn their knowledge into marks.
Your goal: Walk into your first assessments knowing you’ve practiced the skills you’ll need, not just memorised the content.
And Then? Enjoy Summer Holidays!
You will have completed your first HSC assessments, built some strong study habits and developed a solid foundation for the year ahead.
Now it’s time to take a few weeks over the summer holidays to rest and recharge 🙂 However don’t stop completely, as we approach the summer we will release our Summer Study Guide so you know exactly what you should be doing over the break.

How HSC CoWorks Turns Daily Practice Into Exam-Day Confidence
The HSC is a year-long marathon of content. And as every student eventually discovers: cramming doesn’t work. Research on how memory works is clear. Without the right kind of practice, students forget most of what they study within days, which is why so many feel...
