More Than Halfway: Why This HSC Term might Feel like the hardest

May 5, 2026

Congratulations you are now halfway through your final year of school! Whilst exciting, this can also be where students feel the most pressure academically.

The early momentum and motivation from the start of Year 12 is waning, you have been through a few assessment cycles, rankings feel real, and the pressure is starting to be felt. Many students are exhausted from months of sustained focus whilst also managing part-time jobs, sport, family commitments, and the pressure to maintain some sense of normal life.

Why Term 3 HSC Is So Important

This term, schools are delivering the final sections of the syllabus before the July holidays so that when students return from holidays the focus can shift entirely to Trial exams.

Trials are not just another assessment. They are the closest simulation of the HSC itself and your results will be the biggest proportion of your assessment score. What you do now directly impacts how prepared you will feel walking into those exams. So what are our tips for Term 3?

1. Don’t ignore Term 1 content.

2. Keep up with current topics.

3. Get Exam Ready.

1. Actively Revise Your Term 1 & 2 Content

Term 1 especially can feel like a distant memory, but these topics will be examined in your Trial Exams. It can be easy to ignore re-visiting old topics when you have so much happening right now, however just 1 hour a week per subject working on a previously studied topic will go a long way down the track.

TRICK: Instead of spending hours of your time re-reading notes, shift to active revision:

  • Topic Mindmaps from memory
  • Practice questions without looking at answers
  • Write responses under timed conditions
  • Mark your own work and identify gaps or get feedback from the CoWorks Markers.

2. Keep Up With Current Topics (Without Burnout)

As new content comes in quickly, it’s easy to fall into passive study habits just to “keep up”. Keep on top of your current topics by doing the following each week:

  • Review new content within 24–48 hours
  • Build your topic mindmaps
  • Teach the topic to a friend of family member
  • Attempt some practice questions to ensure understanding
  • Connect new ideas to previous topics

3. Things You Can Do Now to Be Exam-Ready

Trials will arrive quickly after the holidays. The goal is to walk into the exam room being ‘exam ready’ which means that you can:

  • Recall information without prompts
  • Apply knowledge to unfamiliar questions
  • Manage time effectively under pressure
  • Maintain focus for the length of a full exam

Small, consistent actions now will make all the difference later.

  • Do short bursts of timed practice
  • Attempt at least one longer exam-style task each week
  • Identify and track your common mistakes
  • Build familiarity with full exam papers

If It All Feels Too Much

At this stage of the year, feeling overwhelmed is normal! It doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong, it means you’re in the middle of something demanding. The HSC year IS demanding,

You don’t need to have everything mastered right now. You just need to have a plan and keep moving forward strategically, consistently, and with purpose.

Instead of just adding more hours of study, focus on:

  • Clear priorities – where are the gaps, where are my weaknesses, what tasks will actually prepare me for the exam room.
  • Structured study sessions – plan out each study session and don’t get stuck on one subject/topic at the expense of others.
  • Realistic expectations – you still need to enjoy rest, friends, sport, fun!

The goal isn’t to feel perfectly prepared. The goal is to walk in with:

  • Experience under exam conditions
  • Familiarity with question styles
  • Confidence in your ability to respond

When motivation dips, come back to your goals. Not just marks or ranks, but what you’re working towards… the opportunities, the independence, the direction you want for yourself.

You don’t need to feel motivated every day. You just need to stay connected so that you can keep showing up and keep doing the small things consistently.
