How to Write a Band 6 HSC English Essay

Apr 22, 2026

After working with thousands of HSC students, one thing is clear:

Band 6 essays aren’t written by the smartest students.
They’re written by students who follow a system.

Most students approach English the wrong way. They highlight, take notes, re-read… and then sit down to write an essay and freeze.

Not because they don’t know enough, but because they don’t know how to use what they know.

The HSC CoWorks Essay Building Template (EBT) is the holy grail of essay writing systems!  HSC CoWorks founder Fergus outlines below how the EBT can help you master your essay writing, particularly for the Texts and Human Experience essay.

Start With a System (Not Just Notes)

Most students approach essays the wrong way. They gather endless notes, quotes and ideas and hope it all comes together at the end. But high-performing students don’t just collect information, they will organise it with a clear system.

Think of essay writing like baking a cake:

  • Notes = ingredients
  • System = the method

Without a method, even the best ingredients won’t produce a delicious cake!

The System is the Essay-Building Template (EBT)

A proven system you can use is the Essay Building Template (EBT) a framework that helps you:

  • Organise ideas clearly
  • Align directly with the rubric
  • Build essays faster and more effectively

The EBT forces you to:

  • Condense your ideas
  • Focus only on what earns marks
  • Think critically (not just copy notes)

It’s not about how much you know, it’s about how well you structure and present it.

A strong EBT can be adapted to almost any HSC question because:

  • All questions are based on the rubric
  • Your structure already aligns with it

This is what gives top students confidence under exam pressure.

Master the Core Essay Structure

Every Band 6 essay follows a predictable structure:

Introduction (Top Row of EBT)

Your introduction must include:

  • Theme
  • Context
  • Audience
  • Purpose
  • Thesis

Markers are actively looking for these elements, not just “good writing.” If you include these clearly, you’re already ahead.

Body Paragraphs (Second Row of EBT)

Follow the narrative and structure your essay around the text’s progression:

Proposition (Beginning) – What ideas are introduced

Development (Middle) – How do these ideas evolve?

Resolution (End) – What is the final message?

ADDITIONAL TIPS

1. Band 6 students don’t retell the story, they analyse ideas. For example, don’t just say “power is shown”. Show how power starts one way, evolves through the text and leads to consequences. That’s analysis.

2. Be Selective (Less Is More). Only include your strongest ideas and choose just 2–3 key examples per section.

3. Vocab matters Instead of explaining something in 3 sentences, use one precise word that captures the idea. Strong vocabulary = efficient writing.

now.. Practice

No one was born a great essay writer! It is a skill that students need to develop through a system AND through feedback.

Most students get this backwards:

  • ❌ 80% note-taking
  • ✅ 80% essay writing

You don’t get marks for notes, you get marks for writing and so the fastest improvement comes from:

  • Writing essays
  • Getting feedback
  • Refining your work
  • Practicing under exam timed conditions

Waiting until you “understand everything” is a mistake. The earlier you start, the faster you improve.
