“The HSC Trials”. A phrase synonymous with the business end of the HSC. For the majority of you this set of important exams will be beginning over the next couple of weeks.

Despite the slightly anxious and perhaps even fatigued faces I have been seeing at CoWorks recently, you should all be excited for what lies ahead.

In short, the Trials can be an opportunity for redemption, a chance to further move up the schooling ranks or even solidify your dominance. On the other hand, they also have the potential to become the realization of your downfall.

The difficulty of these next few weeks leading up to Trials are entirely up to your own discretion. They can be consistent revision and exam preparation or spiral into hellish cramming, sleepless nights and the need for one too many coffees.

So, without further ado, here are my 5 golden tips to staying sane, happy and confident throughout these next few weeks:

Take care of your body:

In short, a healthy body makes a healthy mind. No matter how prepared you are, if you happen to be sick during your Trials, you will not be able to perform to the best of your abilities. Doing the small things like staying hydrated, eating healthy and sleeping 8 hours a day can give your brain the chance to function optimally and even assist with your memory retention. Also doing some exercise everyday, even if just for 30 minutes, releases endorphins (or happy hormones as I like to call them) which really helps deal with stress.

Study NOW rather than later:

As Jesse and the rest of the team have been constantly emphasizing throughout the last few weeks, “the key to success is being highly effective and productive with the limited time that you have”. If you are able to create and stick to a thought-out study timetable, there should be no reason why I should see any of you pulling an all-nighter before your first English Exam.

Like I said before, it’s up to you, these next few weeks can honestly be quite bearable, if you just stay consistent and do the work day by day.

Take plenty of breaks in between your study routine:

“I’m going to study for the whole day today”. I’m sure all of you have started a day with this intention and ended up just burning out after the first hour and then watching YouTube videos for the rest of the day.

Studies have shown that your ability to concentrate falls dramatically after the first 50 minutes, and so giving your brain regular breaks gives you the chance to stay focused for longer during the day.

One very good method is the Pornodoro Technique. Its principle is simple. You work for a short period (usually 25 minutes) without distraction and take a break (usually 5 minutes) after that period is done. Anything that distracts you is attended to in that break, where you can also get up and move around.

Stick to your own plan:

Trust in yourself and believe in your own study plan. Remember you have all been in school for almost 12 years now, so you know what studying methods work best for you. Worrying too much about how other people are going about their work will just make you more anxious.

Don’t forget, you’re not alone:

The Trials are meant to be tough, in fact many people actually say that they are harder than the HSC exams, because you are essentially doing the same exams but in a shorter period of time. So remember, you are all going through this together. If you are feeling really tired and burnt out, don’t forget so are your friends. So stick together, support each other, and we at HSC CoWorks will also do our best to push you all through this next couple of weeks.

The truth is, by the first day of your Trial Exams, your marks will all have already been largely pre-determined, based upon the work you are doing now and over the next few weeks. Every extra past paper you do, essay you write or second you spend preparing, is really just an extra mark you are guaranteeing come Trial time. So work hard now, and you will get the marks you deserve later.

“Ultimately, there are more important things in life than exams. Ironically, you might just need to do well in your exams in order to achieve those things.”

Avoiding the tasks you need to do?

Procrastinating after working for only 5 minutes?

Difficulty in trying & implementing new study strategies?

These are all very common issues and complaints occur for all of us from one time or another. Learning about how the brain works will give you a greater understanding into your current study habits and why they are the way they are. It is a well-known fact that the brain is the control centre for your behaviour however a lot of people know very little about it and how it actually operates.

Six insights into the brain as explored by David Rock, director of the NeuroLeadership Institute, may help you identify your behaviours surrounding study and exam performance and therefore give you the opportunity to rewire your old ‘bad study habits’ and create new productive behaviours.

Below we explore the 6 insights and how they relate to YOUR exam performance.

THE BRAIN IS A CONNECTION MACHINE

The function of the brain is to find associations and connections between information, creating neural “maps”.

When we process new ideas we are creating a new map. Creating new maps take up a lot of energy!

New maps increase motivation. This is why when you learn a new skill, such as driving a car, you feel motivated and excited.

Applying this to your HSC performance:

Seek to create new maps of knowledge using techniques such as Mind Maps.

Identify when you are struggling with a problem and strive to challenge yourself to find a solution yourself. Notice your feelings after this moment and use it as inspiration in your next problem.

NO TWO BRAINS ARE THE SAME

There are unlimited ways that a brain may process and store information. This is why people look at things and process information differently.

For Example, have you ever noticed that you and a friend will approach a problem or question in completely different ways. Or have you noticed that study strategies that work for your friend do not work for you at all? This is because no two brains are the same.

Applying this to your HSC performance:

Understand the importance of making your own connections and seeking out ways of processing problems and concepts which work for you.

Always try to remember what strategies have worked for you in the past and utilise this in your next problem.

The Coaching team are constantly working with you to support you generate your own insights and not just ‘tell you’ what worked for us or how we would approach it.

YOUR BRAIN HARDWIRES EVERYTHING

The brain hardwires attitudes, processes and behaviours making it easier for the brain to respond to situations. E.g when you first learn to drive you are concentrating hard. In no time at all your brain has hardwired the actions of getting in the car, indicating, checking mirrors, switching gears without much thought at all!

Hardwiring frees up the brain to think.

Applying this to your HSC performance:

It is crucial that you hardwire the behavior of essay writing and exam performance so that when you are in the examination room, you automatically move into exam mode.

If you have not hardwired the habit of completing an exam or writing an essay, your brain will be focusing on that and you will have no ‘free space’ for the brain to think creatively about the question/s you are being asked.

YOUR BRAIN’S WIRING AFFECTS YOUR PERCEPTION

Perceptions are driven by our habits.

Everyone has a unique perception of the world.

Acknowledging this will help you to understand possible roadblocks in your study technique.

Applying this to your HSC performance:

You may have a hardwired belief that you cannot do a certain Math’s topic or you just don’t understand the Discovery unit and never will. This will then create a false reality and will become an underlying belief of yours.

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DECONSTRUCT OUR WIRING

So how do you change these hardwired connections? Unfortunately, you can’t.

But its not all doom & gloom! You CAN create new ‘positive’ wiring which over time will replace the old ‘negative’ wiring.

Applying this to your HSC performance:

Whenever you are stuck on a problem do not dwell on it, rather think of new possible ways you could approach it.

This may include using new and better techniques and methods such as structuring your essay a different way or applying new techniques to an equation you are trying to solve.

IT IS EASY TO CREATE NEW WIRING

Every day our brain creates enormous amounts of new neural maps or connections

However, there is a difference between a map that is held in our working memory (a thought) and a map that is hardwired in the deeper parts of our brain (a habit)

In order to hardwire a new behaviour, you need to give it enough attention over a period of time so that a habit is formed.

The less effective paths or habits you are not using will slowly become less connected over time.

Applying this to your HSC performance:

Reattempt & Resubmit! The more you submit your work for similar style questions throughout the year, the more likely you are to hard wire the information.

Make effective study techniques a habit and do them more than the ineffective study techniques – attempting exam style tasks, submitting a practice essay, completing multiple choice.

Next time you come across a Mount HSC challenge, keep the brain in mind and think about your thinking.

Reason 1

Prove to yourself that you can put in the effort when it counts

The HSC is just a challenge and it goes without saying that in life you are going to be presented with more challenges. What better opportunity is there to prove to yourself that even though you wanted to rest or stop you were able to push through and demonstrate your determination, persistence, resilience and all the other qualities it takes to conquer your HSC. If you did it for your HSC, it will be much easier to do it at University and then easier again when you move into your exciting career.

Reason 2

Do it for your parents.

They have backed you all the way, investing in your education and sacrificing all kinds of things that you won’t understand until you have children yourself. While you might not always agree with them, you have to acknowledge that they only want the best for you. Regardless of the outcome they will be proud of you but what they would love to see more than anything in the world is for you to give every bit of effort you have towards conquering your HSC. Showing them that you tried your hardest and put in your full effort all the way to the finish line will be one of the greatest gifts you will ever be able to give them.

Reason 3

Make your summer holidays unbelievably good this year!

How good are the summer holidays? The beach, Christmas Day, NYE, Holidays, weeks on end of relaxing. Now imagine all of those things with the feeling that you never have to go to school again. Christmas day with your family and an ATAR you are proud of. Partying with your friends knowing you conquered your HSC challenges. The fireworks on NYE to celebrate the end of a tough but rewarding year. Days at the beach pinching yourself just to make sure it’s not just a dream. If you want to make your summer of 2018/2019 unbelievably good, finish your HSC strong and with zero regrets.

Reason 4

You only get one chance (unless you repeat the HSC like me!)

In only a few short weeks your HSC will be done forever and there will be no opportunity to turn back the clock and have another go at it. While I don’t regret anything in my life, learn from my mistake and give it everything you’ve got so you don’t have to do it again.

It goes without saying that students will be tired from a big term, a big year and all the 18th celebrations, sporting events, job commitments etc but remember you are going to have a HUGE rest once the HSC is finally over. How good will Schoolies be knowing that you didn’t take it easy in the final stages? What if you could boost your ATAR by one, two or three points because you put in the extra hours while others took the easy road? How good will walking out of the exam room for the very last time be with zero regrets around your effort in the final stages.

Having helped 1000’s of past students to conquer their own HSC, I can promise you that every extra bit of effort you put into these final weeks will be worth it. No one ever regretted going the extra distance.

With this in mind, you obviously need stay motivated and energized to put in the hours of training for the exam room so to save you looking for inspiration online here are my favourite YouTube clips to get into the zone when I am working towards a big deadline.

This is an exercise in fueling your energy tank so you can get the job done. As I say to my students, what happens to a car when it runs out of it’s energy source? It stops. What happens to the HSC student who runs out of their energy source? They stop. Keep your tank full so you don’t stop.

Tip 1

Give it everything you’ve got and finish your schooling with zero regrets.

Current Year 12 students started school as a kindergarten student approximately 4500 days ago and in 45 days every student across NSW will be finished. No doubt you are ‘over it’ and ready to be celebrating with your mates at Schoolies but in this final 1% of your days as a school student and with 50% of your marks still up for grabs, there has never been a more important time to go ‘all in’!

Tip 2

Apply the Key Behaviours for HSC Success.

As an HSC CoWorks student you have been exposed to our six key behaviours all year and as always, if these behaviours are adopted and embraced, everything else will look after itself.

Engage your vision – This is the fuel in your tank to ensure you stay motivated and energised to get the job done.

Plan – By having a clear and set daily plan you will ensure that each hour of study is as effective as it can be.

Train.Daily – Train your brain for the exam conditions by constantly simulating the exam room through testing yourself and going against the clock.

Push your comfort zone – The HSC exams are trying to take you outside your comfort zone so prepare for this by training outside your comfort zone. Remember that without struggle there is no progress.

Grit – It is inevitable you will face obstacles and be knocked to the ground in these final stages so pick yourself up and learn from every mistake.

Own it! – Take responsibility for producing the very best result you can in the final exams and leave no stone unturned so you can own that exam!

Conquering your specific subject challenges will be much more likely if the Key Behaviours are in place.

Tip 3

Attend the Mock Trial Exams

It is a given that you don’t want to do a practice exam or that you don’t feel ready to do an exam. Unfortunately, with the final exams so close and worth 50% of your results, it is imperative that you get into exam mode as quickly as possible. As an HSC CoWorks student you can attend 4 open book and 4 closed book exams. Being in a room with other nervous students and finding out your strengths and weaknesses is the fastest way to get ready for the exam room.

If you are not an HSC CoWorks student, please ensure you are completing your practice exams under exam conditions. If you are choosing Open Book first, then it must be within the same time frame as the actual exam and with no digital distractions.

Tip 4

Attend your sessions all the way until you are finished

As an HSC CoWorks student we support you right up until you are finished your final exam. Now that school is over, having 10 hours of structured sessions with accountability and support will ensure that you stay on track and keep focused all the way to the finish regardless of the temptation to go to the beach or take the foot off the accelerator.

Tip 5

Continue to submit your work to the HSC CoWorks marking team

As always, our markers are returning work within 72 hours to provide feedback and support you critically think about how to improve your work for the exam room. The sooner you start submitting those essays that still need work the sooner you will be getting those higher marks. The markers will be marking right up until your final exam so you have the option to submit your work up to 72 hours before the final exam.

So those are my final tips to make the most out these final stages of your HSC campaign and finish with zero regrets.

So perhaps you’ve heard that there have been some big changes to the English Syllabus. English is a compulsory subject for all students, so regardless of the level they’ve elected to study, your teen is going to be impacted. As a parent of a young person about to climb Mount HSC you may be feeling a little apprehensive and anxious about what lies ahead. Perhaps you’ve already had teens go through the HSC and you’re wondering how best to support the next teen to undertake this journey. Well, here are a few tips that will be helpful for you:

 Understand their vision

The HSC journey can be a stressful time in any young person’s life, especially when there have been significant changes. At HSC CoWorks we build in the strategies that will make this journey smoother – and it all starts with vision. It’s much easier to thrive when you know your end goal. Students with a clear vision have stronger motivation and more drive. They also accept feedback more effectively and are more likely to tackle obstacles with a growth mindset. Ensure that you know your teen’s vision, so you can remind them when times get tough and keep them on track.

Source: Pinterest

Remind them that the Preliminary Course (Year 11) is really important.

There have been significant changes in both the Preliminary and HSC Courses. As always (and now more than ever) the Preliminary (year 11) course really hardwires the skills necessary for HSC success. Sometimes students cruise through the prelim year with the plan to commit when the HSC commences. Those who do so really miss out on an opportunity to do the groundwork that will lead to HSC success. It’s important that students own their HSC journey right from the start of year 11. Get curious about what your teen is studying in the Prelim course and work with their teacher and the coaches at HSC CoWorks to keep them on track in this important year.

 Get them comfortable with change

Source: Pinterest

Whether your child has elected to do Standard, Advanced or Extension 1 English, there have been significant changes to the modules. For example, the Area of Study (Discovery) has been eradicated and replaced with a Common Module called ‘Texts and Human Experience’. Your teen will not be able to borrow course notes developed by an older sibling or friend who has already completed their HSC. This isn’t such a bad thing, we don’t recommend that they engage in this practice anyway. The best learning always comes when students do the thinking and the synthesising themselves, determining what is significant and important from their own perspective. They’ll also find it harder to find helpful resources online. Again, this isn’t a bad thing. It will cause them to do the thinking that will help them understand their coursework. Do what you can to encourage your teen to accept the challenge and embrace it.

Get interested in your teen’s texts

With the new syllabus comes a new Prescribed List of texts. Many texts from the old syllabus remain on the list, but there are also a variety of new texts that replace some others. Your teen will find out what texts they are studying at the start of both the Preliminary and HSC Courses. If you enjoy reading/watching/listening to texts yourself, it’s not a bad idea to find out which texts your teen is studying and get familiar with them yourself. That way you can help them thrash out ideas over dinner, in the car, between overs at the cricket – wherever your busy life finds you.

There will inevitably be challenges as your teen tackles the new English syllabus, so encourage them to utilise the coaches and tools offered to them through HSC CoWorks to maximise their success (and lessen your stress!)

Well, the great Greek philosopher Heraclitus certainly got it spot on when he wisely said “the only thing constant is change.” One might even be tricked into thinking he was talking directly about the NSW English Curriculum, which has definitely seen its fair share of changes over the years – and rightly so. We live in a dynamic, fast-paced world and our education must evolve as our society evolves. The curriculum (and its delivery) must adapt to the needs of the learner. So, here we find ourselves again, in the midst of the implementation of a new Preliminary and HSC English Syllabus.

So, how big is the change? Well, it’s pretty significant this time around. Yes, there are new texts for study, yes, there have been some changes to the way students will be assessed by their teachers internally, yes, some of the courses take on a different focus, but, from my perspective, the biggest change is centred on the style of questions they’ll be asked in the HSC. In short, the predictability of the HSC exam question style has changed considerably for some topics. Until now, many students have ventured into their HSC exam with a pre-prepared essay for each question, hoping to adapt it to suit the question posed to them on the big day.

At HSC CoWorks, we have never encouraged this limited style of exam preparation as we believe it inhibits adaptability, creativity and innovative thinking: key skills needed for any young graduate to succeed, especially industries that revere this style of thinking.

You might be curious about how we’re feeling about the new syllabus? Well, pretty good actually. Our coaching methodologies align perfectly with these changes and we feel confidently placed to effectively guide our students through this change. We are very happy to see that the new style of examination

Students will now have no choice but to think more creatively on the spot and adapt their knowledge to suit the question, rather than attempting to get a question to adapt to their pre-prepared essay. Behaviours we already build and enhance in our students. As a result, hopefully what we’re going to see is a generation of young people who are better prepared for the innovative thinking that’s going to be required of them in their tertiary education and beyond.

Yes, the changes are significant, and this will always cause a certain amount of discomfort – but that’s where the magic happens, right outside your comfort zone.

Transcript of my speech from the evening on Alternate Entries into Universities…

Hi Everyone,

For those of you who don’t know me I am Cam and I will be informing you guys about Alternate entries into universities as well as scholarships.

There are two main alternate entry pathways disadvantage entries and ability entries. There are also some others that I will touch on but if anyone has any questions or specific enquires please come and chat to me throughout the night.

Disadvantage Entries

Education Access Scheme

This is for any school leaver who has experienced disadvantage during their senior studies. There are multiple different types of disadvantage considered and some common examples are financial, emotional (such as the loss of someone close), disability, ect.

For this you will need to apply through UAC with an application and evidence of your disadvantage.

This may get you entrance into your chosen course with a lower minimum ATAR based on UAC and the Uni allocations for each case.

Some universities have a separate scheme for low socioeconomic level students. This can either be a whole school with students then automatical accepted or an individual which will need to go through the EAS scheme. An example of this is the E12 scheme by USYD. If you have any questions about this please just ask me.

A lot of universities also have an Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander scheme where if a student identifies as either an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander they can get a lower minimum ATAR for their chosen course, again please ask if you have any questions.

Ability Entries

Some universities offer a future leaders scheme aims at those whole lead through out their senior years. Some universities make this only the school captains and Dux’s such as Sydney. The application for this is either a nomination by your high school with supporting evidence or an applications, this varies for uni to uni. Achieving this will result in potentially a lower minimum ATAR for your course.

Athlete scheme

If you have performed at the State or National level in your final year of high school you may be eligible for a lower minimum ATAR based off your training. Some universities will ask for evidence on why the training has affect your studies so please look into this for each uni.

Finally we have transferring and bridging courses.

A bridging course is where you gain the necessary knowledge for a course that you want to do so that you ‘bridge’ your knowledge and are able to complete the course you want. A great example of this is getting into engineering a lot of students choose to do one to make sure that their math skills are up to par. These bridging courses are used when a course has a prerequisite that you have not studied.

Transferring is extremely common weather it is transferring course or even transferring uni, we have here tonight a couple coaches who have transferred whole universities. To transfer into a course you WAM is considered (this is your average mark over your uni course) and compared to your ATAR, which ever one is higher is considered. This allows students who didn’t get the ATAR to get into courses that required a high atar. For example if you want to do commerce at USYD and it is 95 entrance but you get 90, if you WAM is high enough over the first year you can transfer into Commerce.

Since scholarships are a bit more personal I am more than happy to answer any of those during the night.

I hope this has helped and again if you have any questions please feel free to ask me through out the night. Thank you.

Knowing your ‘why’ when you are studying for your HSC is the first and most important step to improving results.

Without clarity around all the benefits (a.k.a your ‘why’) of conquering your HSC challenges a student is unlikely to operate with the level of focus, self discipline and drive required in order to achieve a top result.

While most students will have some kind of ATAR target and this will be on a piece of paper stuck to their wall above their desk that says ‘90’ and while this is better than nothing it is unlikely that this will inspire someone to take action and persevere when the going gets tough.

Turning a number with little emotional attachment into an inspiring Vision that energises a HSC student to take consistent action requires exploring the rewards and associated feelings that will accrue if Mount HSC is conquered.

What do you want to be able to say to yourself about your effort levels when you walk out of the exam room for the very last time?

When you are at schoolies in Byron or Gold Coast how do you want to feel looking back at your effort levels towards your HSC?

What qualities do you need to demonstrate in order to make your HSC Vision your reality?

What are the qualities you will need to achieve success in life and university? (hint – the same ones as you need to conquer your Mount HSC!)

How will you feel when you open up your results and you have achieved your goal?

How will you feel if you open your results if they are disappointing?

What University courses are you interested in? How will it feel getting into your preferred course?

Do you want your HSC results to be a demonstration of your gratitude to your parents for everything they have done for you over the last 18 years?

Here is an example of the type of HSC vision that provides the inspiration and energy required to actually take the actions that will turn the HSC Vision into an HSC reality.

John’s HSC Vision: Use my HSC to create a better future for myself, Canada trip post HSC will be that much better if I have zero regrets, Business related degree, Schoolies will be that much better if it is a reward for all the hard work, 85-92 ATAR, i want to use the HSC to demonstrate that I have persistence, courage, determination and resilience in the face of challenges.

As you can see there can be so much more to HSC goals than simply a number. At HSC CoWorks we position the HSC as an opportunity to develop into an accomplished operator who is ready for the exciting challenges of Mount Uni and Mount Life.

In our next blog in this series of ‘Getting and staying motivated for HSC success’ we will look at how students can keep their HSC Vision firmly front of mind throughout their HSC campaign and as a result eliminate distractions and procrastination. CLICK HERE TO READ

The HSC coaches provided invaluable motivation throughout the year, being in a position similar to myself not long ago and coming out so successfully I turned to them constantly for ongoing support to continue to work. When I had doubts in my ability or lost motivation to work the coaches were constant reminders of the rewards which comes with hard work, and I am very thankful for this. Spending so many hours together over the year I found no request was ever too great of the coaches, going above and beyond to ensure all of our many requests were attended to. The HSC CoWorks team is a unique and amazing group who allowed me to achieve more then I thought I could and I am not sure how I would have survived the year without them so thank you again ☺
