<p><strong>It’s easy to confuse just showing up with making progress</strong> because you showed up so something must be happening.  That’s better than not being here right?</p>
<p>Well yes, showing up is better than not even showing up at all&#8230; but barely.  <strong>If there is no tangible output the opportunity to create, collaborate, challenge, improve and fail at something has been missed</strong>. As we all know, with no struggle, there can be no progress.</p>

However, in the case of achieving a great HSC result, just showing up to move some paper around, copy down some words from the textbook to a word doc (aka ‘notes’), highlighting, messaging friends, googling something and not much more is <strong>very</strong> <strong>well intentioned but it’s not going to improve performance. </strong></p>
<p><strong>If you want to improve performance, your output needs to increase and if you want to improve your performance you must keep yourself accountable to your output. </strong></p></div>

<p>One thing that will set apart a Band 5 from a Band 6 in the Personality Study of Modern History is use of historiography. While Part A of this response is typically a lower-order ‘describe’ style question, Part B will always be evaluative and require you to make your own judgement surrounding your chosen historical personality.</p>
<p>Through using reputable historians, your own understanding of your chosen personality will be enhanced, as it will encourage you to think EVALUATIVELY and come to your own conclusions surrounding the influence of your personality upon history.</p>
<p>As I studied Leon Trotsky, I have compiled a collection of 6 great historians and a few quotes that are worth your time to learn so you can be on the way to a Band 6 response. When looking at these quotes, try and identify what parts of the Modern History syllabus they fall under and how they could help you answer an essay question.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="p1"><span class="s1">20 years ago I sat my HSC and was lucky enough to receive HSC coaching and as a result Modern History became my favourite subject. I wrote essay after essay as my marks gradually moved into the A Range and I became excited about exam questions!</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">The topic of 20th Century Germany (Weimar and Nazi Germany) became a life long interest for me. I am fascinated with the circumstances by which Hitler came to power but also how Germany under Hitler’s rule was able to re-arm and become an aggressor in a world that 20 years earlier had seen so much death and destruction.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">For me, it was the Historians perspective on the events which really allowed me to understand and critically analyse the period from 1918 to 1939. Using historian quotes to support the position I was developing in my essay responses made things much easier. Knowing my quotes extremely well (90% memorized) allowed me to shape each essay response to suit the question.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">As Donald Trump came to power last year I was taken back to my study of Hitler and I couldn’t help but see such an eerily similar rise to power. Does reading this quote by Perloff remind you of anyone?</span><span class="s1"> </span></p>

<h4 class="p1"><span class="s1"><b>Remember that Modern History essay writing is a skill..</b></span></h4>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">How does anyone learn a skill? </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Persistence, practice, resilience and then some more practice. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">While knowing your quotes is valuable.. the only way to prepare for the exam room is to practice by responding to actual past HSC and Trial questions, against the clock (ie 40 minutes) and ultimately under exam conditions. Your first few practice essays might be 80 minutes and open book but if you keep practicing, show some grit and keep practicing you will be able to shave some time off each essay as you will be using the same content in each essay, just with a different angle to suit the question. The historian quotes will be a big help in crafting a strong argument for whatever question the examiner gives you.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Here are some quotes I think are very useful and my recommendation is to go through them and explore how each idea supports or contradicts your existing arguments. For the quotes you like, try and include them in your essays and get some feedback from your teacher or an experienced HSC marker on whether it is strengthening your argument.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Fingers crossed that history doesn’t repeat itself and the people can see that Trump’s views are as crazy as Hitler’s proved to be.</span></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;">When it comes to studying Russia and the USSR as your national study, you may have already heard the name Stalin thrown around as a prime example of a totalitarian dictator or heard of the Bolsheviks as a revolutionary communist group – but who really were they?</p>

Let&#8217;s start off with the Bolsheviks. The Abdication of Tsar Nicholas Romanov in March 1917 ended 300 years of autocratic rule in Russia, leading the Duma (Parliament) to emerge as Provisional Government. However, they continued involvement in WWI (against popular consensus). Up rose the Petrograd Soviet as an alternative to the Provisional Government, which consisted of 3 groups: Bolsheviks (including Lenin and Stalin), the Mensheviks (Trotsky – later became a Bolshevik) and the Social Revolutionaries. Now we are in a period of dual power between the Proletarian values of the Petrograd Soviet and the Bourgeoisie values of the Provisional Government. The Bolsheviks offered the people “peace, land and bread”, through ending involvement in the war, agrarian revolution and, as the name implies, food for the population. With the proletariat representing the majority of the population, there was an impetus for the Bolsheviks to overthrow the Provisional Government in the 1917 Revolution.This brings us to Stalin. The Bolshevik state under Lenin alluded to a conflict between idealistic notions of Marxist ideology and what was practical for Russia at the time. The Bolsheviks implemented a plethora of reforms including highly progressive Women’s rights, an agrarian ‘land decree’, centralisation of the economy and the use of terror and force to enforce party policy. Stalin, despite strengthening economic control under GOSPLAN and using terror and force as a central component of his political administration, reversed some of the fundamental aspects Bolshevik party’s regime. Stalin advocated enhancing traditional Russian values and notions of family, reversing some of the highly progressive and ideological reforms surrounding women – essentially retreated from the legacy left by the Bolsheviks to create his own Stalinist state. Through introducing the 5 year plans to &#8216;industrialise, weaponise and consumerise&#8217; in conjunction with collectivisation of peasant farms, Stalin sought to strengthen the global position of the Soviet State as a priority to implementing idealistic notions of Marxist theory.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">What Stalin did that Bolsheviks failed to achieve, however,  was to transform Russia from a backward agrarian state into an industrial powerhouse that rivaled the rest of the world. Nevertheless, the Bolsheviks laid the foundations for which Stalin could emerge as a powerful totalitarian figure.</p>
