So perhaps you’ve heard that there have been some big changes to the English Syllabus. English is a compulsory subject for all students, so regardless of the level they’ve elected to study, your teen is going to be impacted. As a parent of a young person about to climb Mount HSC you may be feeling a little apprehensive and anxious about what lies ahead. Perhaps you’ve already had teens go through the HSC and you’re wondering how best to support the next teen to undertake this journey. Well, here are a few tips that will be helpful for you:

 Understand their vision

The HSC journey can be a stressful time in any young person’s life, especially when there have been significant changes. At HSC CoWorks we build in the strategies that will make this journey smoother – and it all starts with vision. It’s much easier to thrive when you know your end goal. Students with a clear vision have stronger motivation and more drive. They also accept feedback more effectively and are more likely to tackle obstacles with a growth mindset. Ensure that you know your teen’s vision, so you can remind them when times get tough and keep them on track.

Source: Pinterest

Remind them that the Preliminary Course (Year 11) is really important.

There have been significant changes in both the Preliminary and HSC Courses. As always (and now more than ever) the Preliminary (year 11) course really hardwires the skills necessary for HSC success. Sometimes students cruise through the prelim year with the plan to commit when the HSC commences. Those who do so really miss out on an opportunity to do the groundwork that will lead to HSC success. It’s important that students own their HSC journey right from the start of year 11. Get curious about what your teen is studying in the Prelim course and work with their teacher and the coaches at HSC CoWorks to keep them on track in this important year.

 Get them comfortable with change

Source: Pinterest

Whether your child has elected to do Standard, Advanced or Extension 1 English, there have been significant changes to the modules. For example, the Area of Study (Discovery) has been eradicated and replaced with a Common Module called ‘Texts and Human Experience’. Your teen will not be able to borrow course notes developed by an older sibling or friend who has already completed their HSC. This isn’t such a bad thing, we don’t recommend that they engage in this practice anyway. The best learning always comes when students do the thinking and the synthesising themselves, determining what is significant and important from their own perspective. They’ll also find it harder to find helpful resources online. Again, this isn’t a bad thing. It will cause them to do the thinking that will help them understand their coursework. Do what you can to encourage your teen to accept the challenge and embrace it.

Get interested in your teen’s texts

With the new syllabus comes a new Prescribed List of texts. Many texts from the old syllabus remain on the list, but there are also a variety of new texts that replace some others. Your teen will find out what texts they are studying at the start of both the Preliminary and HSC Courses. If you enjoy reading/watching/listening to texts yourself, it’s not a bad idea to find out which texts your teen is studying and get familiar with them yourself. That way you can help them thrash out ideas over dinner, in the car, between overs at the cricket – wherever your busy life finds you.

There will inevitably be challenges as your teen tackles the new English syllabus, so encourage them to utilise the coaches and tools offered to them through HSC CoWorks to maximise their success (and lessen your stress!)

Well, the great Greek philosopher Heraclitus certainly got it spot on when he wisely said “the only thing constant is change.” One might even be tricked into thinking he was talking directly about the NSW English Curriculum, which has definitely seen its fair share of changes over the years – and rightly so. We live in a dynamic, fast-paced world and our education must evolve as our society evolves. The curriculum (and its delivery) must adapt to the needs of the learner. So, here we find ourselves again, in the midst of the implementation of a new Preliminary and HSC English Syllabus.

So, how big is the change? Well, it’s pretty significant this time around. Yes, there are new texts for study, yes, there have been some changes to the way students will be assessed by their teachers internally, yes, some of the courses take on a different focus, but, from my perspective, the biggest change is centred on the style of questions they’ll be asked in the HSC. In short, the predictability of the HSC exam question style has changed considerably for some topics. Until now, many students have ventured into their HSC exam with a pre-prepared essay for each question, hoping to adapt it to suit the question posed to them on the big day.

At HSC CoWorks, we have never encouraged this limited style of exam preparation as we believe it inhibits adaptability, creativity and innovative thinking: key skills needed for any young graduate to succeed, especially industries that revere this style of thinking.

You might be curious about how we’re feeling about the new syllabus? Well, pretty good actually. Our coaching methodologies align perfectly with these changes and we feel confidently placed to effectively guide our students through this change. We are very happy to see that the new style of examination

Students will now have no choice but to think more creatively on the spot and adapt their knowledge to suit the question, rather than attempting to get a question to adapt to their pre-prepared essay. Behaviours we already build and enhance in our students. As a result, hopefully what we’re going to see is a generation of young people who are better prepared for the innovative thinking that’s going to be required of them in their tertiary education and beyond.

Yes, the changes are significant, and this will always cause a certain amount of discomfort – but that’s where the magic happens, right outside your comfort zone.

This is the third and final part of our series on ‘Getting and staying motivated for HSC success’ and definitely the most important step if distractions, procrastination or lack of focus is getting in the way of results.

While almost everyone is aware of the importance of having goals as being the first step towards achievement, it is very rare in my experience of students being aware of the importance of engaging with these goals (a.k.a ‘Vision’) as means of staying motivated.

The act of engaging with your HSC vision can be completed very quickly and without much effort but most importantly it will ensure a student is reminded of all the benefits and rewards that await at the top of Mount HSC.

Let’s explore two ways in which you can engage your Vision.

Create a vision board

Over the last 20 years I have made around 10 different vision boards which are simply a visual representation of what you want to create with your life. The process of creating a vision board has always been a highly energising and inspirational exercise setting me on the path to taking the necessary action. If the vision board is viewed daily it acts as a constant reminder of WHY the hard work will pay off.

Write your vision out on a scrap piece of paper

Whenever I have asked a student if their HSC vision energises them to study/work towards their goal, the answer is always a big yes. With that in mind, the simple act of wrting out the vision on a piece of paper is going to remind them of their ‘Why’ and energise them for a better study session. How long would it take to write out this vision? A maximum of two minutes by my calculation. Have HSC students got two minutes per day to be more energised towards achieving their goals?

Engaging ones vision in this way can be done anywhere, anytime throughout the HSC journey but even better it is a tool that can be utilised at University and beyond to ensure that we stay ‘self motivated’ no matter what challenge we are overcoming.

In 2018 there have never been more distractions for HSC students to take their focus and energy away from a year that will have a huge impact on the direction of their life.

Whenever a student indicates that they ‘just can’t focus’ or ‘I get distracted so easily’ or ‘I’m very good at procrastination’ it is clear to me that this is simply a sign that they either do not have a clear vision of what they want to create through their HSC or alternatively they have forgotten about all the benefits and rewards that await them at the top of Mount HSC (aka their HSC Vision).

Using John as an example, if he is 10/10 committed in achieving his HSC vision then he is going to need to work at keeping these connections and pathways in his brain fired up so the actions he takes on a daily basis are consistent with its achievement. If these connections and pathways become tenuous and weak it is unlikely he will have the will power/discipline/motivation to complete the most important tasks.

John’s HSC Vision: Use my HSC to create a better future for myself, Canada trip post HSC will be that much better if I have zero regrets, Business related degree, Schoolies will be that much better if it is a reward for all the hard work, 85-92 ATAR, i want to use the HSC to demonstrate that I have persistence, courage, determination and resilience in the face of challenges.

When it comes to eliminating distractions and crushing procrastination an HSC student is no different to an Olympic athlete, a corporate ladder climbing warrior or a small business owner looking to grow their business. If the vision isn’t clear and front of mind, then distractions will look even more attractive, procrastination will become the default decision and a problems and excuses will creep into the campaign.

The antidote to distractions, procrastination, problems and excuses is to engage with the vision daily so as to give our brain the best opportunity to choose the path to progress and results over the path to inertia.

In our next part to this series on ‘Getting and staying motivated for HSC success’ we look at three ways to engage with your vision daily to stay motivated towards the study actions that count.

Knowing your ‘why’ when you are studying for your HSC is the first and most important step to improving results.

Without clarity around all the benefits (a.k.a your ‘why’) of conquering your HSC challenges a student is unlikely to operate with the level of focus, self discipline and drive required in order to achieve a top result.

While most students will have some kind of ATAR target and this will be on a piece of paper stuck to their wall above their desk that says ‘90’ and while this is better than nothing it is unlikely that this will inspire someone to take action and persevere when the going gets tough.

Turning a number with little emotional attachment into an inspiring Vision that energises a HSC student to take consistent action requires exploring the rewards and associated feelings that will accrue if Mount HSC is conquered.

What do you want to be able to say to yourself about your effort levels when you walk out of the exam room for the very last time?

When you are at schoolies in Byron or Gold Coast how do you want to feel looking back at your effort levels towards your HSC?

What qualities do you need to demonstrate in order to make your HSC Vision your reality?

What are the qualities you will need to achieve success in life and university? (hint – the same ones as you need to conquer your Mount HSC!)

How will you feel when you open up your results and you have achieved your goal?

How will you feel if you open your results if they are disappointing?

What University courses are you interested in? How will it feel getting into your preferred course?

Do you want your HSC results to be a demonstration of your gratitude to your parents for everything they have done for you over the last 18 years?

Here is an example of the type of HSC vision that provides the inspiration and energy required to actually take the actions that will turn the HSC Vision into an HSC reality.

As you can see there can be so much more to HSC goals than simply a number. At HSC CoWorks we position the HSC as an opportunity to develop into an accomplished operator who is ready for the exciting challenges of Mount Uni and Mount Life.

In our next blog in this series of ‘Getting and staying motivated for HSC success’ we will look at how students can keep their HSC Vision firmly front of mind throughout their HSC campaign and as a result eliminate distractions and procrastination. CLICK HERE TO READ

Our idols should stand at the top of their field as an exemplar of hard work and dedication. They should challenge us, motivate us, and inspire us to work towards success. However, many of us choose those we know as our heroes. In fact, over 75% of HSC CoWorks students cite their parents as their idols, and of the remaining 25%, most choose school teachers over highly successful entrepreneurs. Whilst these choices are admirable (and entirely valid), we should also choose a few industry leaders, who’s paths we can follow to realise our dreams.

CHOOSING A ROLE MODEL

Look outside the realms of family and friends, and instead look to those at the very top of your desired field of work. That’s not to say that you can’t admire your family and their work, but unless they hold your dream job, you should also find someone more relevant to your career aspirations.

If you have a dream of swimming professionally, the likes of Michael Phelps and fellow Olympic champions should stand at the top of your list of heroes. If a career in the technology sector is more to your liking, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates would be the greatest role models you could wish for. Whatever your desired industry, the options are endless for choosing a hero.

FOLLOWING THEIR FOOTSTEPS

Once your heroes are clear in your mind, work towards their success. Study their journey, habits, and work. Through this, you may find a Student Key Behaviour that will guide you on your path.

Take the writing path for example — Stephen King has published almost 100 books, sold more that 350 million copies of his work, and has had many of these adapted into movies and TV shows. Forbes sets his income at around $40 million per year, so as an aspiring writer, you’d be crazy not to view him as a hero.

King has a very famous habit that ties in with his success — he is committed to writing 2,000 words a day, every single day, and “only under dire circumstances do I allow myself to shut down before I get my 2,000 words,” he said. Through this method, he finishes a 180,000 word novel in 3 months — impressive!

REINFORCING YOUR VISIONS

Daily reinforcement is key when it comes to motivation and determination, and one of the best ways to instill this is through the creation and display of a vision board. Print pictures of your heroes at the pinnacle of their success, and gather and display their quotes and advice. You could also feature their works, as well as their habits, their awards and their achievements — whatever will motivate you best.

Then, work with those successes in mind, with the mentality of rising to their level.

You know it’s possible, because they have shown GRIT, and done it before you.

Why ‘YET’ Should Be Your New Favourite Word

— How To Develop A Growth Mindset

In order to unleash your full potential, you must first free yourself of any limitations, and realise the power of positive thinking. Though the idea of a fixed mindset has traditionally held sway, numerous studies have shown that a growth mindset better represents our brains ability to learn. Our brain works like a muscle — with the correct training and exercise, it can do whatever you set your mind to.

Having a growth mindset means that you refuse all limitations, and accept that hard work and persistence can get you where you want to be in life. A fixed mindset, however, considers intelligence and creative abilities to be static — it places limitations on potential, believing that you only have a certain amount of talent that you are born with, and can only excel to the level that that allows.

Only a few small changes can pave the way to a growth mindset —

TREAT FAILURE AS AN OPPORTUNITY

The journey to achieve something teaches you more than gaining the actual achievement itself.

Failure is not the time to wallow, but rather a time to apply extra effort to significantly improve your results. Failure is what you do and understanding what you can learn from it. When you have a fixed mindset, failure is seen as something negative, and paints you as an overall failure. However, when you have a growth mindset, when you fail, you learn.

Jackie Joyner-Kersee, a track and field athlete and Olympic gold medalist sums this up perfectly —

“I derive just as much happiness from the process as from the results. I don’t mind losing as long as I see improvement…If I lose, I just go back to the track and work some more.”

MAKE “YET” YOUR NEW FAVOURITE WORD

Honesty regarding your current abilities, and the challenges that lie ahead is a great thing, but you should always insert ‘yet’ into your affirmations.

I am not good at algebra — YET.

I am not the best at literary devices — YET.

I haven’t mastered essay writing — YET.

This single word can dramatically transform the way that we view our problems. When we recognise that our current condition isn’t good, but we are en route towards progress, the word actually fosters the idea that we are growing and improving.

GET EXCITED ABOUT YOUR WEAKNESSES

Having a growth mindset means that challenges are something exciting, rather than something threatening. When identifying a weakness, rather than letting it intimidate you, you should see it as a challenge to improve.

As Dr Carol Dweck, the author of Mindset says, “rather than thinking, oh, I’m going to reveal my weaknesses, you say, wow, here’s a chance to grow.”

TRAIN YOUR BRAIN LIKE A MUSCLE

Our brains are much more elastic than previously thought, constantly growing new connections, and new opportunities to expand our brain power. IQ and talent are not fixed, but can be changed based on our experiences and our attitude.

Our brains can be developed through the right training, just like strengthening our muscles at the gym. When we view our brains this way, we stop hiding behind excuses and get honest — if we’re not changing, it’s because we’re lazy, not because we can’t do it.

There are plenty of exercises that you can do to expand your brain in areas you felt were impossible to develop — you can find some here.

VALUE EFFORT OVER TALENT, AND THE PROCESS OVER THE END RESULT

You will learn the most when you push yourself, choosing more challenging work, making mistakes, and then learning from these mistakes.

Many students think that making a mistake is one of the worst things that you can do in school, but rather, it is one of the best — by making mistakes you are allowing yourself to learn more.

However, when making mistakes, it is important to ensure that you are remaining productive, rather than careless — you should try to make sense of a problem, explore different approaches to its solution, and articulate your thinking process, ask questions, make educated guesses, try out different ideas, and constructively critique others.

It is most important to remember that you learn more on the journey to solving an issue than you do by finding an answer in the end. Be fearless in your educational pursuits, and make sure to value the journey just as much as the destination.

BELIEVE IN YOUR POTENTIAL

Somewhere along the way, we tend to lose our child-like wonderment, and our thirst to know everything and anything — however this mindset is a great way to ensure continual growth. Go back to your roots and try to tap into your child-like curiosity. Ask more questions, and become more curious about everybody that you meet, the journey that they have been on, and what they can teach you.

Decide today to continually focus on learning and growth.

How Michael Jordan become one of the World’s best basketball players or how Sara Blakely become the youngest female billionaire in the world with her Spanx business?

Were these individuals born smarter, stronger, more motivated?

I don’t think so!

If you haven’t heard about Grit then please do yourself a favour and get yourself a copy of Angela Duckworth’s incredibly insightful book called.. you guessed it.. Grit! Don’t have time to read you say? Angela also delivered a great 6 minute TED Talk which is well worth watching.

Grit argues that it is not about how smart you are, but rather how resilience, initiative, and having guts gives you a distinct advantage over others. At HSC CoWorks we are such believers of this that it is one of our Key Behaviours. We work with our students to develop their Grit and apply this skill to the HSC and ultimately life after. Not everyone is born with Grit, but everyone can develop it.

So is that student who is doing well at school that much smarter than you? Or is it that they have done that many more practice essays, pushed their comfort zone to improve results, asked the questions and stayed curious about what it is they are learning, and ultimately stayed ‘gritty’ and persevered to the end?

No, wait, that’s True Grit, the 2010 Western film remade from a John Wayne classic. This true grit is a better story. It’s the story where you achieve great success in your life, find out what you’re truly made of, and see better results than those who claim they didn’t have the “odds in their favour”, or were born on the “wrong side of the tracks”. This is your story.

Well, it could be. Grit isn’t something that everyone intuitively understands, but it can be a learned skill. It’s one of the defining traits of anybody who has ever achieved anything in their life. It’s the dogged, determined pursuit of what you want, no matter the odds, or even because of them.

Angela Duckworth, in her bestseller Grit, talks about the differences between people who apply grit to their life, and those who don’t. As she quotes, “Our potential is one thing. What we do with it is quite another”.

Your True Grit

So, what does that mean for you? It means that you may have coasted through your life as the smartest kid in the class. You may have never studied for a test because it was too easy. You may have gotten good grades because you understood the material better than everyone else. Were you the “smart kid” in class? Have you been told that you’ve been intelligent your whole life? Well, the startling news, and it’s been proven with excellent studies, is that that intelligence means exactly diddly squat in the real world.

That’s the bad news. There is good news. As Duckworth says in her book, “as much as talent counts, effort counts twice as much”. So, if you feel like you’ve been the dumb kid. If you’ve been routinely told you’ll never amount to anything, or that you haven’t been born as lucky (whatever that means) as anybody else, than you should be comforted by that fact. Grit, not intelligence, is the way of the world. And those who perform harder and work longer, and try more avenues to success, in other words, those who have grit, are those who become successful, happy, and healthy.

It’s tough to hear this message. It’s tempting to think that successful people are CEOs or rich businessmen or top athletes because they’ve been fortunate. Duckworth talks about this too. “Nobody wants to show you the hours and hours of becoming. They’d rather show the highlight of what they’ve become.”

So, if you’re smart or dumb, if you’ve been lucky or unlucky, if you’ve been tall or short or fat or slow or whatever else label you’ve heard about yourself, that doesn’t matter. It just doesn’t. The only factor that pulls you through, the only thing that sticks in the sieve of time is grit and determination. Everybody can outhustle the competition, and that’s the exciting message about grit. Anybody can have it and everybody can use it.

By all means, watch the movie True Grit. It’s a wonderful film and Matt Damon and Josh Brolin are excellent. But even better, develop your own story of true grit. It will serve you better over the course of your whole life.

Further Reading: If this message intrigues you, we here can’t highly recommend enough Angela Duckworth’s book Grit. Along those lines, we’d also like to suggest Mindset by Carol Dweck and The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday. They all talk about the principles of determination and pushing through no matter what’s in your way.

On the climb to the top of Mount Everest I feel it is safe to say that when the going gets tough for climbers, the thing that keeps them going is some kind of reminder of all the benefits of achieving the summit. For HSC students, it is inevitable that students will experience sections of their HSC campaign which feel overwhelming and all too much however some kind of daily reminder of the benefits awaiting at the top of Mount HSC will reduce the frequency of days spent with a problem or drama focus.

Tools/strategies:

Option 1 – Build a vision board (visual representation of your HSC and life goals). Have some fun with it and get excited about the opportunities that await.

Option 2 – Write your HSC goals out on a piece of scrap paper every time you sit down to work/study as this will always prime you with a stronger focus for that particular study session.

Option 3 – Carry a small pocket notebook around with you and every time you have a spare 5 minutes (eg – on the bus to school) revisit and re-write your goals.

Recommended investment of time: Less than 5 minutes daily

Daily Ritual #2

Daily revision of key concepts, definitions, quotes and formulas
Your brain is a connection machine however for the connections to be formed an investment of time and energy must be undertaken to ensure these connections are well travelled and ready for you to easily recall under time pressure in the exam room. If the connections formed around a topic are weak, it will be difficult to perform at ones true potential in the exam room.

Recommended investment of time: 45 minutes daily

Tools/strategies:

Option 1 – Create flashcards and have a family member test you or test yourself by writing out your quotes/definitions under exam conditions.

Option 2 – Create a topic mindmap master copy and write out mindmap under exam conditions until you know it perfectly (around 5 x through per topic should be enough initially and then once or twice a week going forward). (A3 size paper is ideal for this exercise).
Option 3 – Syllabus write outs are a popular option where you are simply memorising the syllabus.

Special note on your daily revision exercises – This daily ritual is all about stretching and testing yourself to be able to recall this content quickly in the exam room. If you can’t recall the key concepts easily outside of the exam room don’t expect you will be able to recall them with time pressure thrown in.

The act of simply creating ‘notes’ which are very pretty and comprehensive but haven’t been hardwired to your brain is simply not enough.

Daily Ritual #3

Regular practice with exam style questions/sections of exams
Once the content has been hardwired it’s time to strengthen these brain connections by applying them to challenging exam style questions which will create even more of the connections students will need to perform to their true potential in the exam room. Getting expert feedback is crucial here however students own self evaluation and identification of areas for improvement will allow them to take full responsibility for the results they are generating.

“Spectacular achievement is always preceded by unspectacular preparation”

Recommended investment of time: At least 45 minutes daily

Tools/strategies:

Option 1 – Access past HSC exams on the NSW Education Standards Authority website
Option 2 – Access the 1000’s of past HSC exam questions on the HSC CoWorks portal separated by topics including a sample answer and marker comments.
Option 3 – Attempt practice exam questions the HSC CoWorks portal and submit for expert feedback and marking. (Please note that all multiple choice are automatically marked)

Special note on regular practice of exam style questions

The only way these daily rituals will work is if they are undertaken daily (or at a minimum 5 days per week). Consistency of effort will always beat a sudden burst of effort just before the exam.

Also, the closer a student is to the Trial Exams (August) and the final HSC exams (October) the more of these exam style tasks a student needs to be undertaking. Simulating the exam room is essential to being prepared for the actual exam room. Students should be building up to being able to complete an essay within 40 minutes under exam conditions and full exams within the time limit (90 mins through to 180 minutes) under exam conditions.

“Nothing worth having comes easy”

While there is more to conquering Mount HSC than simply completing these three daily rituals, they do form the foundation for that special moment when a student can say when it’s all over ‘I gave the HSC 100% effort and I’m proud of that’.
