The Paper 2 marking guidelines consistently reward students who:

• address the question directly
• demonstrate a well-informed understanding of ideas, context, language and form
• use detailed and well-selected textual references
• make thoughtful and purposeful judgements
• compose a sustained and insightful response.

Clear, precise writing almost always outperforms essays filled with memorised jargon.

Questions change every year, but the module expectations remain consistent.

When students think about preparing for Year 12, they often picture buying new stationery, organising folders, or enjoying one last holiday before the “real work” begins. The reality is that the students who thrive in Year 12 don’t wait until the first day of school to get organised.

They start before the year even begins. While many Year 11 graduates spend the holidays doing a very minimal amount, the highest-performing students use that time to build a foundation that gives them confidence, clarity and momentum from the very first week.

Year 12 Moves Fast

One of the biggest surprises for students is just how quickly Year 12 begins.

Within the first few weeks, teachers are introducing new content, handing out assessment schedules and outlining expectations for major works. For students who haven’t taken the time to prepare, it can feel like they’re already playing catch-up before they’ve even found their rhythm.

Instead of focusing on learning, they’re trying to work out:

• When are my assessments due?
• How do I balance my workload?
• What should I be studying each week?
• How do I avoid falling behind?

There are just 40 days until HSC Trial Exams begin.

That might sound like plenty of time, but ask any past Year 12 student and they’ll tell you the same thing… the final six weeks disappear fast.

Many students make the mistake of treating the July school holidays as an extended break and then try to switch back into study mode when school returns. The problem is that momentum is hard to rebuild, and before you know it, trial exams are here.

The good news? Forty days is enough time to make a significant improvement in your results if you use them wisely.

The Goal

Your goal over the next 40 days is not to “study harder”, but to “study smarter”. The goal is to:

• Finish hardwiring content.
• Identify your weakest topics.
• Practice exam-style questions every week.
• Build confidence under exam conditions.
• Walk into trials knowing you’ve done everything you reasonably could.

Think of this as your final training block before your soccer grand final, or that half marathon you’re training for.

Throughout all 4 Phases, it is essential that you continue to prioritise

• Sleep
• Exercise
• Nutrition
• Hobbies

A tired brain will not perform well, no matter how many hours you’ve studied.

Many students spend hours revising topics they already know because it feels productive. The biggest gains come from improving the areas you’ve been avoiding. Aim for:

• 2-3 focused study blocks per day
• 60-90 minutes per session
• Short breaks between sessions

At the end of each week, ask yourself:

“If this topic appeared in tomorrow’s exam, how confident would I feel?”

If the answer isn’t “very confident”, it needs more attention.

With trial exams fast approaching, many students are starting to feel the pressure. The good news? You do not need to study perfectly to make huge progress over the next 70 days. What matters most is building the right habits now.

Why Trial Preparation Matters

Trials are more than just practice exams. They are an opportunity to build momentum, confidence, and exam skills before the HSC itself.

The students who perform best are rarely the ones who “cram” at the last minute. They are the students who train consistently, stay connected to their goals, and practice performing under pressure.

If you want to walk into your trials feeling confident, focused, and prepared, not overwhelmed and full of regret, these are the three most important steps to start today.

How to Do It

Create a visual reminder of your goals and aspirations. This could be:

• A vision board
• A collection of motivating images
• Quotes that inspire you
• Photos representing your future goals

Place it somewhere you will see every day, near your desk, on your phone wallpaper, or inside your study space.

If the idea of a “vision board” feels cliché, think of it simply as a daily reminder of the life you are working towards.

A Real Example

Jesse often helps students create goal boards using tools like ChatGPT to make the process more engaging and personal. One student even included images connected to their dream overseas holiday as motivation during long study sessions.

Common Mistake

Many students dismiss this step because it feels unnecessary or “too cheesy.” But when stress builds and energy drops, students without a clear vision often lose momentum quickly.

How to Do It

Spend at least 20 minutes each day reviewing foundational content from your subjects.

Focus on active recall strategies such as:

• Mind mapping
• Flashcards
• Writing quotes from memory
• Explaining concepts aloud
• Testing yourself without notes

The goal is not passive reading, it is training your brain to retrieve information quickly.

A Real Example

Jesse shared the story of a student who memorised 12 quotes from The Crucible by spending just three focused minutes each day recalling them from memory. Over time, that small habit dramatically improved both his confidence and essay performance.

Common Mistake

Many students spend all their energy on new content while neglecting older topics. By trials, they realise they have forgotten large sections of the course and need to relearn them under pressure.

Daily revision prevents this from happening.

How to Do It

Start practicing:

• Timed essays
• Past paper questions
• Handwritten responses
• Full-length exam sections

Create realistic conditions:

• Use a timer
• Remove distractions
• Work without notes
• Practice handwriting for extended periods

As trials get closer, gradually increase the frequency and difficulty of these sessions.

A Real Example

Jesse regularly reminds students not to wait until all their notes are finished before starting practice exams. Students who delay exam practice often fall into procrastination and feel overwhelmed later.

The students who improve fastest are usually the ones willing to attempt questions before they feel fully prepared. At the very least it exposes gaps and focuses your study time on target areas.

Common Mistake

Thinking “ I’ll start practice papers once I know everything. ”

In reality, practice papers are part of the learning process. not something you do at the very end.

Preparing for trials is not about studying perfectly. It is about building momentum through consistent action.

If you focus on these three things:

1. Staying connected to your goals
2. Training daily
3. Practicing under exam conditions

…you will give yourself the best possible chance to perform at your potential.

Most importantly, you will walk into your trials knowing you prepared with purpose  and walk out with no regrets.

2. Use a planner: Simple tool for staying organised

Writing down your assignments, test dates, and deadlines helps you see the full picture of your week. A planner gives you control over your time instead of constantly reacting to what’s due next.

Whether it is a paper or digital planner, having an overview of what is coming up and what tasks are due when will support your ability to tackle tasks consistently and proactively.

3. Break big tasks into smaller steps

Large projects can feel overwhelming when you look at them as one big task. Breaking them into smaller, specific steps makes it easier to get started and track progress along the way.

For example, instead of “write history essay,” break it into: choose topic, gather sources, create outline, write introduction, draft body paragraphs, write conclusion, proofread, get feedback. Each step becomes a tangible task which you can tick off and see progress with.

Small tasks are less intimidating to start, ticking off tasks gives you a sense of making progress, and taking more proactive action avoids last-minute cramming and overwhelm.

4. BUILD YOUR SUBJECT ROADMAPS

Most students begin the HSC year by diving straight into content i.e attending class, writing notes, highlighting textbooks, making flashcards.

However, many students miss integrating this very important, but uncommon habit:

Studying the syllabus before they study the content.

This one shift will transform your entire HSC journey from reactive to proactive, and as we always remind our CoWorks students:

6. Test yourself regularly: Active recall builds deeper learning

Reading over your notes feels productive, but it’s not the most effective way to prepare for an exam room. Testing yourself by trying to recall information from memory strengthens the neural pathways that help you remember.

Close your notebook and write down everything you can remember about a topic in Mindmap format. Check what you got right and wrong, then focus your next study session on the gaps. 8. Create visual summaries

Start with the central topic and branch out to related ideas (the main syllabus points). Use colours to group similar concepts and test yourself around your mindmap by turning it over and trying to re-create it from scratch.

By grouping related concepts and having a visual representation of ideas, you will have a much faster recall in the exam room.

9. Reflect and plan ahead

Setting aside 15-20 minutes on Sunday to review the past week and plan the next one keeps you organised and reduces next week’s stress. What did you accomplish, what didn’t get done, and what’s coming up.

What went well this week? What could I do differently? What are my priorities for the next seven days? This simple habit helps you stay proactive rather than reactive with your schoolwork.

10. Look after yourself 🙂

Your brain needs rest to consolidate memories and perform at its peak. Pulling all-nighters before exams actually hurts your ability to recall information when you need it most.

Regular exercise, adequate sleep (8-10 hours for teens), and breaks from screens all support better learning. These aren’t extras you fit in after studying, they are foundations that make your study time more effective.

what are the core skills a HSC student needs?

1. Planning and Prioritisation for Multiple Subjects

Planning involves setting goals and mapping out the steps to reach them. For HSC students, this means looking at assessment schedules, identifying what’s due when, and working backwards to create a specific study plan.

Prioritisation helps your child decide which tasks need attention first. Not every assignment carries the same weight and certain subjects will require more time. Ranking tasks by urgency and importance prevents last-minute cramming and missed deadlines.

At HSC CoWorks we call this “eating your frogs first” and is an idea borrowed from Brian Tracy.  Identify your “frog task” for each subject and start there. This is the task which is important but probably something you’re also avoiding. If you start with your frog, all of the tasks that follow will feel much easier.

2. Organisation Skills for Keeping Track of Deadlines

Organisation goes beyond having a tidy desk and colour coded planner. It includes knowing where to find your notes, keeping digital files sorted, and maintaining a reliable system for tracking due dates.

A good organisation system reduces mental load. When your child doesn’t have to search for resources or wonder what’s due next, they can direct that energy toward actual studying.

3. Task Initiation and Getting Started on Assignments

Task initiation is the ability to begin a task without excessive delay. Many HSC students know what they need to do but find starting difficult. This might not be laziness and instead a genuine executive function challenge.

Breaking tasks into smaller, specific actions helps with initiation. “Study for English Assessment” feels vague and doesn’t give much of a clue where to start. “Review Module A notes for 25 minutes” or “Quote training for 10 minutes each day” gives your child a clear starting point.

Externalising information helps your child build scaffolds outside the brain during study, so the brain isn’t trying to hold everything at once when they revise or walk into the exam.

5. Flexible Thinking When Plans Change

Flexible thinking helps students adapt when things don’t go according to plan. An illness, sporting commitments or family event can completely throw off a study schedule. Students with cognitive flexibility adjust their plans without spiralling.

Encourage your child to view setbacks as problems to solve rather than failures. Building this mindset takes practice but pays off during unpredictable moments. Life happens, obstacles will get in your way, however it is most important to embrace these setbacks and move forward rather than becoming stuck.

6. Emotional Regulation During High-Pressure Periods

The HSC naturally brings pressure. Students who can recognise and regulate their emotional responses study more effectively.

Deep breathing, meditation, breaks between study blocks, and positive self-talk all support emotional regulation. These aren’t soft skills, they directly impact your child’s ability to perform under exam conditions and other stressful situations that they will face across their lifetime.

Traditional tutoring focuses on subject content, explaining concepts, working through problems, and preparing for specific exams. Executive function and Performance coaching focuses on how your child approaches their studies overall.
