YouTube began in 2005 as a start up and was purchased by Google in 2006, yet retain a distinctively start up feel.

From the website:

“Our passion for all things video extends throughout all we do. Our offices are constantly abuzz with the innovative ways people are engaging audiences through video. After all, it’s our job to have a finger on the pulse of pop culture and deliver it to more than 33 million users each day. Even our conference rooms are named after some of our favorite videos and YouTube stars (e.g. David After Dentist, Double Rainbow).

Their headquarters are in San Bruno California, in the heart of Google who they work with to build ideas and find solutions to their challenges on-screen and behind them.

Fun facts:

They deliver content to about 33million people a day

That’s about a billion people a month

70% of users are outside the US

More than 72 hours of video are uploaded every minute.

But YouTube is much more than a trove of viral videos (although we may have one or two). It has grown to become a platform for citizen journalism, a historical record of world events, a forum for political debate, a stage for the next breakout music star, a virtual classroom, and in some ways, the pulse of pop culture.

Watch the video below to find out about a day in the life of YouTube.

Business Chicks is Australia’s largest networking community for women in business. They believe that great stuff happens when women come together to uplift and inspire each other. When they stop competing, and start lending a hand. When they give of their expertise and themselves so that others can benefit from it. They want to always use their success to give others a hand up.

From the Business Chicks website:

“We’re not just building a business at Business Chicks; we’re creating a movement. We invest heavily in our people and ensure that everything we do reflects the brand we’re working to build – from the way we market our products and communicate with our members to the culture we live and breathe at our headquarters. Our team run the business as if it were their own and in turn, we support our team’s personal goals and visions.

Business Chicks is a unique place to work. It’s a fast paced, entrepreneurial environment, where creativity and fun and being challenged are paramount. We’re restless. We want to be better. We want to grow. We want to learn and give back and make the world sunnier. If you want this too, then we’d love to talk!”

Following on from my last economics blog about International organisations affecting trade, I thought it would be good to continue to look at trade and globalisation. This week we look at trade agreements and blocs that Australia is involved in. These are useful for your Topic 1 essays and really show the markers that you understand the real life application of what trade agreements involve, rather than just the theory.

From the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Office:

“Across the globe, there is an expanding network of free trade agreements (FTAs). High-quality, comprehensive free trade agreements can play an important role in supporting global trade liberalisation and are explicitly allowed for under the World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

FTAs can cover entire regions with multiple participants or link just two economies. Under these agreements, parties enter into legally binding commitments to liberalise access to each others’ markets for goods and services, and investment. FTAs also typically address a range of other issues such as intellectual property rights, government procurement and competition policy.”

Significant trade agreements that Australia is in:

1. ASEAN- Australian-New Zealand FTA

The Agreement Establishing the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA) is Australia’s most ambitious trade deal to date. The countries of ASEAN – Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – constitute one of the most dynamic economic regions in the world.

AANZFTA is Australia’s first multi-country FTA. It is the first time Australia and New Zealand have been involved jointly in negotiating an FTA with third countries. It is the first time ASEAN has embarked on FTA negotiations covering all sectors including goods, services, investment and intellectual property simultaneously. This makes it the most comprehensive trade agreement that ASEAN has ever negotiated.

2. Australian-United States FTA

The Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA) is a long-term commitment and framework to strengthen trade relations and economic integration with the United States across all sectors of the economic relationship. It significantly improves Australia’s attractiveness as a destination for US investment.

3. Trans-Pacific Partnership
The TPP is still in negotiation yet is being marked as an unprecedented free trade agreement involving seven Pacific-rimming countries to establish a new trade region-based agreement. It is aimed at uniting the Asia-Pacific region into an era of free trade in a shift away from the power centre of the Asia to a bigger regional trade bloc.

If you want more information on these, or any other of Australia’s FTA’s then check out the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Office here.

Australian Unemployment figure hits 10 year high

This week it was announced that the Australian unemployment rate hits 10 year high to 6%. Read more here

China export figures out this week show signs of defying slowdown

With China making up most of Australian exports this is good news for the Australian Economy. Read more at Bloomberg here.

Euro-Area Economic Growth Figures stronger than expected

France and Germany are keeping the Euro region growing. Click here for the full article

How the RBA can reduce the unemployment rate

Ross Gittins in his article from Saturday, Why the jobs will come though we can’t say where. explains how the RBA can reduce the unemployment rate.

So what’s the Reserve’s ”jobs plan”? You ought to know. It’s to encourage borrowing and spending on consumption and investment – and, in the process, counter the employment-dampening effect of our still-too-high exchange rate – by keeping interest rates at near-record lows. With any luck, our dollar will fall further as the US Federal Reserve phases out its policy of ”quantitative easing” (creating money).

What makes our Reserve so confident doing this will, before too many months have passed, create lots of additional jobs and get the unemployment rate heading back down towards 5 per cent? Well, apart from orthodox economic theory, decades of experience. It’s worked every other time, why won’t it work now?

As for the government itself, there is more it could be doing to enhance the economy’s job-generating capacity. One is to borrow as much as necessary to provide our businesses with adequate public infrastructure and ensure existing infrastructure is used efficiently through such things as appropriate pricing.

Australian Dollar back above 0.90c to 1 USD.

12 month chart below shows where the Aussie dollar has been in the last 12 months. Falling dollar will help exports and hopefully offset any slowdown in the mining sector.

The easiest path to getting a great result in HSC Economics is to be actively interested in what is happening with the global and Australian economy as it happens. Economic indicators and policies are analysed on a hourly basis across the globe allowing students to have a constantly evolving text book. We believe that having a finger on the pulse of what is happening with the global economy as well as Australia’s economy will allow our students to learn to love what makes the world of business and economics go round.

If you are serious about a Band 6 result in Economics in 2014 then you need to know about the economy of Australia’s biggest trading partner, China. This article from the latest issue of the Economist is a great summary of what to expect from China which will largely determine where our own economy will be heading.

This next article looks at how the appeal of China for multinationals is losing its appeal despite still presenting enormous opportunity.

We recommend the following sources for up to the minute Economic Analysis:

1) Bloomberg – The website the financial industry use.

2) The Economist – The original source of Economic analysis

3) Ross Gittins – The Sydney Morning Herald Economics Editor. Ross’ easy to understand writing is a must when assessing the performance of the Australian economy.

HSC CoWorks provides tuition and coaching in HSC Economics to students at our Bondi and Mosman tuition centres. We have experienced HSC Economics markers who return essays within 72 hours and we have tutors who achieved Band 6 results in Economics who are trained in the NeuroLeadership Brain Based Coaching principles to support our students have their own insights about how Economics works.

HSC CoWorks provides premium HSC tuition and coaching services in conjunction with an interactive online tuition platform, which allows students to be fully supported 24/7.
