It might feel like you’ve only just started Year 12, but by Christmas, you’ll already be around 25% of the way through your HSC school year.

The good news is that what you do over the next few weeks can make a huge difference to how confidently you approach your first assessments, and how much you can actually relax over summer.

So, before the assessment period kicks in, here are three things you should be focusing on right now.

1. Get Organised and Take Control of Your Workload

One of the biggest challenges of Year 12 isn’t necessarily the difficulty of the content. It’s managing everything that needs to get done. Between school, homework, assessments, sport, work and your social life, it’s easy to feel busy without actually making meaningful progress.

Here’s where to start:

• Map out your assessments. Know exactly what’s coming up, when it’s due and what content will be assessed.
• Break big tasks into smaller ones. An English essay or Economics assessment feels much more manageable when you’ve broken it into achievable steps.
• Plan your week. Allocate specific times to work on each subject rather than deciding what to study when you sit down.
• Tackle the difficult tasks first. Don’t spend all your time on the subjects or activities you already feel confident in. We call this “Eating your Frogs”.

Here’s what to practice:

• Past-paper and exam-style questions: Get familiar with how HSC questions are structured and what they’re actually asking.
• Timed responses: Practise working under time pressure so you’re not caught off guard in the assessment room.
• Essay writing: Learn how to build strong arguments, structure responses and apply feedback to improve your writing.
• Understanding marking criteria: Know what distinguishes an average response from a high-mark response.

You’ve spent months preparing for your HSC exams. Now, with just 24 hours to go, what’s the best use of your time? Should you keep studying? Complete another practice paper? Memorise more content? Or put the books away and relax?

The answer depends on how well you’ve prepared, but one thing is certain: the final 24 hours should be about getting yourself ready to perform, not exhausting yourself trying to learn everything at the last minute.

1. If You’ve Prepared Well, Trust Your Training

If you’ve been putting in the work consistently, now is the time to back yourself. One of the biggest mistakes students make is trying to cram as much information as possible into their brains the night before an exam.

You’ve spent months building your knowledge and exam skills. Don’t undo that preparation by exhausting yourself in the final 24 hours.

Instead, focus on keeping your brain active with some light, targeted revision.

Here’s what we recommend:

• Test yourself on key quotes, formulas and definitions.

• Review your essay structures and response strategies.

• Complete a few short exam-style questions.

• Practice recalling important information without your notes.

• Review your timing strategy for the exam.

Then give yourself permission to switch off! Go for a walk, get some exercise, eat well and get an early night.

Your goal is to walk into the exam room feeling fresh, confident and ready to perform.

2. If You’re Behind, Focus on What Will Make the Biggest Difference

Let’s be realistic. Not everyone arrives at the final 24 hours feeling completely prepared.

If that’s you, don’t panic. But you do need to be smart about how you use the time you have left.

This is NOT the time to rewrite notes, highlight textbooks or spend hours passively reading content.

For Maths or Science, it might mean tackling questions in your weaker areas, reviewing common mistakes or testing your recall of key formulas and concepts.

The important thing is that you’re actively using your knowledge, not just looking at it.

3. Train Your Brain for the Exam Room

Here’s something we remind our HSC CoWorks students all the time:

Knowing the content and being able to perform under exam conditions are two very different things.

You might know your quotes, understand your concepts and feel confident when studying at home. But can you recall that information quickly, under pressure, without your notes and with the clock ticking?

That’s the skill you need to train.

The exam room is full of uncertainty. You don’t know exactly what questions you’ll get, and you won’t have the luxury of unlimited time to think through your answers.

The more you practice under these conditions, the more familiar they become.

And the good news? You don’t need to complete another three-hour practice paper to achieve this.

Try these quick exam-training challenges:

• 5 minutes: Recall as many key quotes or formulas as possible.
• 10 minutes: Plan an essay response to an unseen question.
• 15 minutes: Write a paragraph without notes.
• 20 minutes: Complete a set of exam-style questions under timed conditions.

Set a timer, remove your notes and challenge yourself.

The more comfortable you become working under pressure, the more confident you’ll feel when it really counts.

4. Manage Your Energy and Keep the Momentum Going

By the time you reach the middle or end of your HSC exam block, it’s completely normal to feel tired and ready for it all to be over. You’ve worked hard, your friends might be finishing their exams, and the temptation to switch off is real.

But remember, your final HSC exams contribute 50% of your overall HSC mark in each subject

The key is to manage your energy rather than expect yourself to maintain the same intensity every single day. Break your study into manageable sessions, focus on your highest-priority tasks and give yourself something to look forward to when they’re done.

You don’t need to study every waking hour. You just need to make the hours you do study count.

5. Don’t Let Exam Nerves Take Over

Even the most prepared students can feel nervous before an exam.

Jesse’s advice is simple: move your body and focus on your breathing.

If you’re feeling anxious the day before an exam, get outside. Go for a walk, do some exercise or spend time doing something that helps you relax.

And if those nerves kick in when you sit down in the exam room? Take a few slow, deep breaths.

Give yourself a moment to settle before you start thinking about the questions.

Remember, you don’t need to know every answer immediately. You need to stay calm, think clearly and apply the skills you’ve spent months developing.

Confidence doesn’t come from knowing exactly what’s going to be in the exam. It comes from knowing you’ve trained yourself to handle whatever comes your way.

HSC 2027 has officially begun and with a new HSC English syllabus comes a fresh opportunity to build the skills, confidence and strategies needed to achieve a Band 6. After working with thousands of HSC students, one thing is clear:

Band 6 essays aren’t written by the smartest students. They’re written by students who know how to turn their knowledge into a strong, well-structured argument.

Too many students approach English the wrong way. They highlight, take notes, memorise quotes, re-read their texts… and then sit down to write an essay and freeze. Not because they don’t know enough. But because they don’t know how to use what they know.

The good news is that essay writing is a skill, and like any skill, it can be developed through a proven system, practice and feedback.

The syllabus may have changed, but strong essay-writing skills remain as important as ever.

So how do students develop this skill??

Step 1: Start With a System, Not Just Notes

Think of essay writing like baking a cake.

• Notes = Ingredients
• Essay-writing system = Recipe

Without a recipe, even the best ingredients won’t produce a great cake! The same applies to HSC English.

Many students spend hours gathering notes, quotes and ideas but struggle to organise them into a compelling essay.

Introducing the HSC CoWorks Essay Building Template (EBT)

The Essay Building Template (EBT) is a structured framework that helps students:

• Organise their ideas into a clear argument.
• Connect their knowledge to syllabus requirements.
• Develop a strong thesis.
• Select and analyse relevant textual evidence.
• Build a logical essay structure.
• Adapt their ideas to different HSC questions.

The EBT encourages students to condense their knowledge, think critically and focus on what matters.

It’s not about how much you know. It’s about how effectively you can use what you know.

Step 2: Know What the Syllabus Is Asking You to Do

If you want to write a Band 6 essay, start where the markers start: the syllabus and marking criteria.

One of the biggest mistakes students make is knowing their prescribed text well but failing to connect their analysis to what the question is actually assessing.

Each English focus area has specific concepts and skills that students need to demonstrate. For example, in Texts and Human Experiences, students need to explore how texts represent human experiences and how composers use language to shape meaning. This means your essay shouldn’t simply describe what happens in a text. It should analyse the ideas, perspectives and experiences being represented and explain how the composer constructs them.

Pay Attention to the Key Words in the Question

The verbs used in HSC questions tell you what kind of response is required.

• Analyse: Examine how meaning is created.
• Explain: Demonstrate how or why something occurs.
• Evaluate: Make a judgement about significance or effectiveness.
• Compare: Explore similarities and differences and explain their significance.

NESA Glossary of Key Words

A great essay doesn’t just demonstrate knowledge of a text. It answers the specific question being asked.

Stronger thesis:

“Through fragmented narrative structure and recurring symbolism, the composer represents collective trauma as both isolating and unifying, revealing how shared suffering shapes human identity.”

The stronger thesis makes a clear argument, identifies how meaning is constructed and creates opportunities for deeper analysis.

Structure Your Essay Using the EBT

At HSC CoWorks, we encourage students to consider five key elements when planning an introduction:

• Theme: What central idea are you exploring?

• Context: What circumstances shape the text?

• Audience: Who is the text addressing?

• Purpose: What is the composer communicating?

• Thesis: What is your overall argument?

These are planning prompts, not a rigid formula. Your introduction should establish a clear argument and respond directly to the question.

For body paragraphs, one effective approach is to follow the development of ideas throughout the text:

Proposition (Beginning): What ideas or tensions are introduced?

Development (Middle): How do these ideas evolve or become more complex?

Resolution (End): What final message or understanding emerges?

This approach works particularly well for narrative texts, although other questions may benefit from a thematic or conceptual structure. The goal isn’t to retell the story. It’s to demonstrate how ideas develop and why they matter.

Every strong body paragraph should:

1. Establish an argument.
2. Introduce relevant evidence.
3. Analyse how meaning is created.
4. Explain the significance of that analysis.
5. Connect back to the question.

Step 4: Be Selective With Evidence and Focus on Analysis

High-performing students use evidence strategically, not excessively.

Before selecting a quote, ask yourself:

• Does it support my thesis?
• Can I use it to answer different questions?
• Does it allow me to analyse language, form or structure?
• Does it connect to the syllabus concepts?

A smaller number of flexible, well-understood quotes is often more valuable than memorising dozens of examples.

Analysis Is What Makes the Difference

Consider the difference between describing and analysing below:

Description:

“The protagonist experiences isolation and struggles to connect with others.”

Analysis:

“Through recurring imagery of physical separation and fragmented dialogue, the composer constructs isolation as both an emotional and social experience, highlighting the tension between an individual’s desire for belonging and their inability to connect.”

The second example identifies how meaning is created and explains why it matters. Band 6 writing is about the quality of your thinking and analysis, not how many quotes or sophisticated words you can squeeze into an essay.

Step 5: Prepare to Adapt, Not Memorise

One of the biggest traps HSC students fall into is memorising an entire essay and hoping the exam question will suit it. Sometimes it does, but often it doesn’t and this is where marks are lost.

The better approach is to prepare a flexible essay framework built around:

• A strong understanding of the syllabus.
• Clear arguments and key concepts.
• Versatile textual evidence.
• An adaptable thesis.
• A logical essay structure.

This is where the Essay Building Template becomes particularly valuable. Instead of starting from scratch when you see an unfamiliar question, you already have a framework for organising and applying your knowledge.

Step 6: Stop Taking Notes. Start Writing Essays.

Here’s something we tell HSC CoWorks students regularly:

You don’t get marks for how many pages of pretty and well organised notes you’ve written. You get marks for what you can demonstrate in your writing.

Yet so many students spend the majority of their English preparation highlighting, making notes and organising folders.

If you want to improve your writing, you need to write and get regular feedback on your writing.

• Building essay plans using your EBT.
• Practicing introductions and body paragraphs.
• Writing complete essays.
• Getting specific feedback.
• Refining weaker sections.
• Practicing under timed conditions.

You don’t need to write a full essay every time you study English. Even 20 minutes spent improving a thesis or body paragraph can make a difference.

Feedback Is Essential!! Practice alone isn’t enough if you’re repeating the same mistakes.

Effective feedback helps students identify where their arguments lack clarity, where analysis becomes description and how they can strengthen their writing.

Write. Get feedback. Refine. Repeat.

How to Reset and Finish Your HSC Strong

For many Year 12 students, the 2026 Trial HSC exams have either just wrapped up or are fast approaching. And when they finish, it can feel like you’ve just climbed one of the biggest mountains of your school career.

Months of assessments, revision, practice papers and pressure have culminated in the Trials. You’re tired. Graduation is getting closer. The end of school suddenly feels very real.

So what happens next?

For many students, it’s something we call the post-Trials slump and we see it every single year.

It’s that period where the intensity suddenly drops, motivation disappears and the thought of getting back into serious study feels almost impossible, especially with the excitement of graduation around the corner.

While taking a break after Trials is important, the weeks that follow are also some of the most valuable weeks of your entire HSC year.

Trials are not the finish line. They are your dress rehearsal.

They have just given you incredibly valuable information about what is working, where marks are being lost and exactly where your attention needs to go before the real HSC exams begin.

Loss of urgency: The HSC exams still feel a little way away. It becomes very easy to think, “I’ve got plenty of time.”

Graduation distraction: There is also a lot happening socially and emotionally. You’re approaching the end of 13 years of school, and understandably, your attention starts shifting towards graduation, celebrations and what comes next.

None of this means you’ve lost your motivation for good. It simply means you’ve reached a predictable stage of the HSC year and you need a strategy for moving through it.

OUR TOP 5 TIPS TO GET OUT OF THE POST TRIALS SLUMP

1. Take a Short, Intentional Break

You do need to recover but the mistake is allowing a few days off to quietly turn into a few weeks.

Give yourself permission to switch off for a short period. Sleep in. See friends. Exercise. Watch Netflix. Get outside. Do things that have nothing to do with the HSC. But give your break an end date.

If you take a week off from the gym it can be hard to rebuild your routine. Same applies to your HSC study.

2. Turn Your Trial Results Into a Game Plan

Your Trial results are far more valuable than simply the mark at the top of the paper. They show you where you performed well, where you lost marks and how you responded when you were placed under genuine exam conditions.

Before launching back into study, take some time to properly analyse what happened and where the gaps are.

You don’t need to jump immediately back into huge study days.

Start with small, achievable tasks:

• Create 3–4 Mind Maps to reactivate your knowledge.
• Rewrite one paragraph of an essay using your Trial feedback.
• Correct mistakes from a Trial paper.

Small wins make starting again easier.

And once you start taking action, momentum builds surprisingly quickly.

4. Move From “Studying” to Exam Training

The final stretch of the HSC isn’t the time to spend hours simply rereading notes. You now know the content. The question becomes:

Can you produce what the examiner wants, under pressure, within the time available?

That means your preparation should increasingly look like the thing you’re preparing for.

• Do past-paper questions.
• Write essays.
• Complete timed sections.
• Practise recalling information without your notes.
• Submit work for feedback.
• Analyse mistakes.
• Then do it again.

Make your mistakes now, not in the HSC exam room.

5. Use the Support Around You

This is not the stage of the HSC to disappear into your bedroom and try to do everything alone. Use the people, resources and accountability around you.

Step 7: Prepare for Adaptation, Not Memorisation

Questions change every year, but the module expectations remain consistent.

If your preparation is built around:

• module concepts
• syllabus outcomes
• flexible evidence
• strong thesis ideas

then you can adapt confidently to almost any question.

Students who memorise essays often struggle when a question takes an unexpected angle. Students who understand their module can reshape their ideas and respond effectively under exam conditions.

• Organising digital and physical note taking methods.
• Understanding each subject’s HSC syllabus and reviewing marking criteria and marker guidelines.

• Ensuring there are no gaps or areas of weakness in Year 11 topics which will form assumed knowledge for Year 12.

When students know what needs to happen and when, they spend less mental energy worrying and more energy making progress.
