As a student approaches year 12 and the reality settles in that the study techniques and approach they have been using to date are no longer working, the confusion starts to set in, and with confusion and poor results, comes excuses.

The HSC is no different to any challenge that life throws at you. The only issue for many students is that this is the first big challenge they have had to undertake in life and they just don’t know how to approach it.

As a parent who has overcome many obstacles and challenges in life, you probably already know the answer. Your child just needs the right mindset to achieve success! At HSC CoWorks, we say no to excuses and yes to results! 

Here’s how:

• Have a vision. A goal. Whether it be short term (I want to get 80% in my next maths exam / I want to beat my best friend in my next English assessment) or long term (I want to be a Fashion Designer in New York and need 95 to get into the UTS Course).
• Have a Plan. How are you going to achieve your goal? What steps do you need to take to make incremental progress. After all, a goal without a plan is just a wish!
• Take some action! The spot in the 1st rugby team won’t come by watching rugby on TV, the great maths result won’t come by watching YouTube videos and scrolling Facebook every 20 minutes. Breaking down tasks into smaller goals and working through these tasks each day will ensure that your child is making traction towards their HSC goals. 
• Do more than you think you need to. By pushing your comfort zone consistently, you will see results! Practice until getting outside of your comfort zone through completing challenging, exam-style tasks feels comfortable!
• Keep at it! Bad results are a part of the journey. Obstacles will come up throughout the HSC and throughout life. It is how an individual deals with these obstacles that will set them apart from the rest of the pack. Embrace your mistakes and learn from them!
• Take responsibility and own it! This is your HSC. This is your life. No one else can do this for you. Not your teacher, not your parent, not your tutor, not a YouTube maths guru. This is on you!

We were thrilled to open the doors to our newest campus in Dee Why on the Northern Beaches this week!

Managing Director, Jesse Gardiner and his wife live on the Northern Beaches with their 2 kids and opening a campus in their home-town has been a project almost 2 years in the making.

Our Dee Why coaching team includes the lovely and experienced team from the Mosman and Chatswood campuses, as well as new hires from the local area who finished their HSC within the last 2 years with incredible results.

The Dee Why campus mirrors our other 3 campuses with individual student workspaces, wall painted whiteboards and lots of motivational quotes to keep our Year 11 and 12 students energised and in Vision!

We were very fortunate to find a spacious, light and airy office in a fantastic location in the heart of Dee Why. We are only 20 metres from the main bus stop and directly opposite the updated Meriton shopping precinct.

In late 2014, Carol & I had a highly stimulating educational tour of the Finnish schools. Our purpose was to find out what the Finns were doing to create such fantastic educational outcomes.

As you may know Finland leads the World in the most significant indicators of educational outcomes be it maths, languages etc and also, more importantly, student capacity to engage in thinking and problem solving.

In the 1960’s Finland was a relatively poor country dependent on fisheries and forestry. The Finnish government then went about the process of installing a highly innovative educational program to support individual opportunity through education and to create a generation of thinkers who would help build a national culture of innovation.

Whilst touring these Finnish schools we constantly encountered the following comment; “We are here to show students how to use information, not accumulate it. That does not constitute thinking. All the information we need is now on a laptop”.

Classroom spaces are incredibly well equipped, students work independently in spaces that are designed for reflective thinking and problem solving. The teacher’s role is more that of a facilitator not a person who simply delivers information. Whilst constant testing is not a feature of the system students do participate in an HSC style exam in order to enter university. We were really pleased to see that our approach at HSC CoWorks and also the strategies which we have adopted were clearly validated in Finland i.e. creating highly independent & successful learners as well as promoting each student’s capacity to engage in thinking and problem solving.

So the question is, how long will it take Australia to catch up to the World leaders in Education?
